Did you hear the fuel pump clicking, presuming it's an SU pump tap it with a small hammer or screwdriver handle, the points in the pump stick!
Yeah, SU, was googling and reading up last night and came up with same info, originally was looking to see where it was located but thanks mate, good stuff
Is that a removable cover on it? The points are on the end with the wires, turn ign on and give it a tap, should click fast then slow down to nothing when the fuel fills up the float chambers in the carbs!
Ahh bugger, I found the fuel pump, it was further back but I tapped it without ignition on?? I'll give it another bash when the battery is recharged. Turning over nicely though!! Lol
I don't think so fella, not sure, reading up on it, it says diaphragm used to create vacuum. I'll be reading up on it again see what I can find out.
SU fuel pump has no oil. Plunger wiggles a diaphragm in and out; two plastic one way valves on in and out port ensure fuel is sucked in one port and out the other. Dead simple. If it keeps ticking then something is wrong. If no ticking after a few seconds then could be a blockage further up the pipe, or it could be the needle valves on the carb float chambers if you have a spark but no firing. You should hear it tick when you turn on the ignition and then gradually stop as the float chambers in the carbs fill up.
This bit.... You should hear it tick when you turn on the ignition and then gradually stop as the float chambers in the carbs fill up. nope
You put a little cycle oil down the tops of the dash pot dampers on the SU carbs but that's nowt to do with starting
Ok. Fuel pump might be the problem. If you take the fuel hose off at the carb end and get someone to turn the ignition on while you stand poised with a jam jar. If the pump is working it should tick away and pump fuel out into the jar. The electric pump, unlike on the bus, is on and pumping whenever the ignition is on regardless of whether the engine is turning.
Ermmm, am I sposed to?? Haven't done that?? Dro the pump ain't working, found this to have a bash but I'm gonna replace the pump
No clicking from the pump, I reckon that's the problem so going to change it over for a new one rather than faff around seeing as they're prone to go anyway?
I have just seen you can buy a new set of points for around £13?? I might refurb the old one as a spare??
Don't worry about the carbs for now that was Barn throwing a curve ball in, that's a thing for when it's up and running, good move on the pump but have you tried disconnecting a pipe at the filter to see if it's actually pumping, I'm assuming it's not working on you saying the filter looked empty?
