Does anyone know of any decent youtube videos with good instructions on how to clean out my oil bath air cleaner and replace the oil? I need to tackle an oil change in it over the weekend (the air cleaner oil, that is), and am slightly nervous about taking it all apart. I would like to give the flaps and valves and stuff a clean inside whilst I'm about it, so any helpful advise, photos, instructional videos would be much appreciated. No idea when it was last done, and anything to help through-put of air into the carb can only be good. Type 1 engine (1776cc), standard carb, round flat-topped oil bath. Thanks
It's simple just pour old oil out , clean with rag inside if grubby use a bit of petrol on rag to wipe then add new oil to the bath there should be a red line in side to show amount need. The flaps just remove spring clip and pull flap out again just wipe of or use something like gunk to remove any thick oily bits and then clean with hot soapy water and dry hope this helps
Undo clamps that hold it onto support , remove rubber connection onto carb and vac pipes onto top, undo bolt/clamps holding top on , remove top taking care as oil will spill out , tip old oil out into container , clean out use absorbent paper , clean gauze , their is a red line goes around inside filter which you will see , this is oil level line . Fill with fresh engine oil to line refit in reverse

There's only 1/2" of oil in the bottom. Nothing much to see or clean apart from the outside to make it look nice.
Preferably fresh oil, not like a VW garage in Algeria did to my Beetle, drain the engine oil and put it in the filter..............which was standard practice apparently. Tony
Yikes! I have some SAE30 which I don't use for the actual engine, so that'll go in the oil bath. Just a quick question, and hopefully not too stupid a one.... if I clean out the oil bath, will it affect the amount of air getting to the carb and therefore will I have to adjust the tuning ? The engine is running quite okay at the moment and I don't want to rock the boat just before I'm due to set off to France.
Na it just cleans the carp out of the air so will do it more efficiently , you should be fine dont play with anything else.
No it should be fine. Have you recently changed the engine oil and set tappets etc (general service stuff?).
What is wrong with that? It just needs to be oil to catch the really big bits of dirt. There is a sticky oily matrix in the top half that catches the smaller bits, and that may need washing out eventually as well.
Absolutely nothing . As said before - the oil is only there to catch the bigger bits and dust draw over it . Squeezing out a cheap post midnight donner would be good enough
