I was talking to the bloke at RJES and he says he now has a plate to convert the Auto, it may be an option in the future.
Few things done tonight. Had to get an extra shim out of one of the spare gearboxes as I needed another one to get the depth right. Easier said than done. Had to split the whole case. Good thing is if got to see what the inside of a dual Hi-Lo range box looks like. Could still be converted but way too much faff I reckon. Next was to check the depth. Then swap the bearings and oil seals over that the diff runs in. Then start bolting the case halves together to setup the back lash. That about there I am at the moment. Put the nose cone on to make sure I can select all gears and show you hall what it looks like. Tomorrow I will bolt it all up and set the backlash up, best find my dial gauge... Trying to get the shims out without splitting the case. Case split Close up of extra gears Close up of extra gears on other side
TBH never really looked into it. Only the last year or so have thought about it. I also need to wait and see what happens with my engine as spending big bucks on the van isn't an option at the moment after fridge and solar, funds are going on the house
Looks trick Matt - well done Glad to see someone tackling such a major project themselves , thanks for sharing
More work on gearbox tonight Back lash setup The gear marking done to check correct meshing of the gears Also my RJES engine mount arrived Sent from my Nexus 6 using Tapatalk
Nice work Matt, looking at your pics reminds me of when I used to build gearboxes for the Adour engines in Jaguars.
Great stuff !! Following with mucho interest , not because i want one - it`s just interesting to see someone getting stuck in , doing it in their garage , hogging the dishwasher and not banging on about how fantastic it`ll be . Nice one - most impressive .
So after doing the gear marking with the paint i wasn't completely happy with the meshing of the gears. had a little think and a quick google and realised it isn't quite right. Then I had a light bulb moment and realised that my DTI gauge is in Thou. so when I set it to "15" it was 15 thou I was setting to not 0.15mm so the "thou" setting is actually 6 thou or a movement of from 0 to 6 on the gauge. So learning has taken place(well, remembering how to read a ruddy DTI properly) when I next get a chance I will put it all back together and re set the backlash and then do the marking again. what I am expecting is the marks to be more in the centre of the paint, down the tooth vertically, as i will have moved the crown gear closer to the pinion my makign the back lash smaller. make sense to everyone?
It doesn't make any sense to me, but i have no ideas about such things! Fascinating to see some serious engineering work though
