Yes that makes sense - the gear tooth angles are further down the slope of the tooth when brought closer together, so yes the backlash will be less.
Spent about 8 hours in my back underneath the camper yesterday, just test fitting the radiator. There were already some holes so used them but as with all these old vans theybdo the quite line up. After much effing and blinding I got it just about mounted up but have to holes to drill and a tiny bit of clearancing on a top hat to clear a bit of fan. A few things done. Type 4 engine and box is out. Heater installed at front of bus on the red 9 design beam, very handy little shelf!! Very pleased with this. I have also decided to go with a hydraulic clutch. Master cylinder should be here soon and I just need to fab up a bracket and link it to the clutch pedal. Then run copper pipe to the slave cylinder at the gearbox. Should actually be fairly easy. Also removed bed shift rod and to my surprise the three bushes were still in tact and in good condition, that'll be £20 wasted on be heritage, should have checked before ordering!! Few more things done today, doesn't seem like a lot but it's the little things that add up. Heater installed including ductwork. Heater lines ran from heater to engine bay ready for connecting. Moved fuel pump bracket from left hand side to right hand side as feed to the engine is on the opposite side to the type 4 FI engine. Made a bracket out of some stainless I had (damn that's hard stuff to cut and shape) for the coolant bottle and mounted that up. Also mounted my engine light switch that @1973daisey gave me 18 months ago!! Works a treat with the hatch now. Started tidying up the leisure battery wiring as I seem to have added more bits over the last few years. One fuse box and then will end up with a single piece of black conduit hiding all the wires.

Bit more done today, heater wiring done, Accelerator cable fitted, solar panel wiring in rear cupboard finally tidied up. Tested heater blowers and it works really well. Quite noisy but that's stood still so hopefully wont be as loud when the engine is running!! Clutch master cylinder kit ordered from car builder solutions. It's all the little stuff that takes the time to sort. Like working out the clutch arrangement. Moving the fuel pump bracket from one side to the next.re-doing the lesiure wiring, not needed for the conversion but easier to do now while the enigne is out. Sent from my Nexus 6 using Tapatalk
More updates. Heater is complete, hoses connected and ducting also. switch is in the dash and all wiring completed and tested. Radiator is now fitted, hopefully for the final time. Also been working on the clutch master cylinder mount. The way I have done it means the pedal sits a bit lower inside the cab but hopefully it will be ok. Will have to wait and see how well it works Also mounted the wiring loom and associated parts inside the rear cupboard. Just waiting for my gearbox mount to be done and then I can test the gearbox fit and get the engine mount tacked in. I picked up a stripped engine block to make this easier.
Nice work Matt. I mounted my master cylinder under the floor in front of the the pedal pivot. (Sorry, forgot to take pics!) My pedal sits a bit lower than standard as well, works fine though. I think your setup, with the master cylinder behind the pivot point, will probably work better actually.
the bit you can see coming down is an extension down from the pedal pointing back at an angle and welded in just in front of the pivot. does that make sense?
have to admit I got Nick Tune to do it in the end. although I got him to leave it unwrapped so i could shape it the way i wanted. then i mounted it on the board
