Hi pulling the engine this month and think i will need to replace my heat exchangers as have better days. late type 4 from 2,0 79 model anybody got anything kicking about before I start the world wide search Stuart
OG /nos ones are pretty rare. In some cases it might be better to repair the original rather than go for aftermarket, as the repro ones don't work as well. There are different types to, oval/ square port. Mine are triangle flanged too (california/ catalyst type) so even rarer.
Thanks I thought this may be the case. mine are rough on the flange to exhaust and have an old oil can riveted to one of them.
Before you start searching you need to know what to search for. A ’79 2.0l would have been square port originally but the heads could have been changed and if it’s a US import the exhaust is different to European. Get underneath and have a look.
I just brushed clean, k-rust'ed the edges and used jb weld to put patches on the holes... Sometimes a blob of jb weld was enough.. coat of rustoleum and look good as new..ish. Still OK 18 months on...
To the best of my knowledge these are OG ones UK bus with a CJ engine so not played with. Ive owned this 14years and have been like this in my ownership Thanks Stuart
If the heads are original you need square port heat exchangers – they’ll be hard to find in good condition but you might be lucky if someone has replaced the heads with oval ports. I’d repair the ones you have but if you still try to buy replacements I’d look underneath to check what you have is what you think you have. Just because you have UK bus with a CJ engine doesn’t mean it hasn’t been ‘played with’. And I think you’ll find it was made in Germany. 27th/28th Dec last year, topic was ‘Type 4 Original Heat Exchangers Modified for Upright Conversion’. mrsmith had/has a pair of OG Type 4 heat exchangers off a 2.0 CJ Engine but they were modified for upright cooling and had some holes to repair – possibly no better than the ones you have. Asking price was £250. I’ve just had another look – they’re oval port.
Don't completely rule out the reproduction ones before you have fully checked out the whole system . Make sure flaps are presents and working etc and the system has no air leaks .I replaced the rotten y-tube, main tube from front to rear and insulated all the pipework. Expect missing bits from a old bus like the alternator adjusting bolt cover or rotten tinware.
I think that's the plan hoping to pull engine out end of month to replace leaking oil cooler, so will see what there like then and deal with it !! Thanks Stuart
