Wiping out a massive faux pas

  1. As some of you may know, I recently purchased a Gibson Les Paul off ebay, cost me a pretty penny! When I got it home I noticed a small amount of damage to the overlay on the headstock, it had peeled away at the very top about a quarter way down, causing the laquer to crack & flake. For those of you who don't know, the headstock is where the tuning pegs are at the top of the neck of the guitar. The headstock is made up of two parts the main part is timber & is part of the neck, then there is a coloured overlay (usually black), which is some sort of laminate stuck on to the face of the headstock, it was this that had curled up somehow... easy fix, bit of wood glue, clamp it down. Carefully lift & remove flaked laquer & respray.... no problem!
The first two parts went really smoothly, glued it down perfectly & actually removed unwanted laquer around the Gibson logo where it had cracked & flaked.... you beauty! I went to laquer it & was a bit generous with the spray can causing it to look awful so I wiped it off along with...........................................the Gibson logo :eek::eek::eek::eek::eek:
I felt physically sick & my @rse actually fell out..... my first thought was 'what am I going to tell Mrs ST????'
I have set about repairing my mistake & am more than pleased with results so far. I sourced a new logo decal by pure luck after watching something on you tube & this is now how it looks.......

I will tell my lovely wife once I have laquered it fully, flatted & buffed it should look the business.
Note to self....... 'Don't do that again you plonker!'

    Good work S T

My lad sat on his and broke the neck. After a lot of tears and some serious joinery and lacquer repair by myself it looks and plays like new.

Which was good news, because them babies ain’t cheap!

  3. My problem was, I was so giddy that I hadn't messed up the logo, I rushed the laquer hoping to get a nice thick coat to match the existing stuff....... Should've given it longer between coats & lots of 'em. I wouldn't mind but I knew this!!!!
