Is there a guide to adjusting the free play out of a later style steering box please? The Bentley covers the earlier box and says adjustment should be made 180-200 degrees of centre but something in the back of my mind seems to recall the adjustment on later boxes being done in the centre.
@snotty wrote something up on this which suggests it's the same for both boxes? http://thelatebay.com/index.php?threads/adjusting-your-steering-box.55052/
Cheers Jim I’ve just found that by using google to search My brains all of a fuzz with the meds I’m on and I must have remembered things wrong. It does appear to need the adjustment at 180 degrees off centre. The box is off the van at the moment do you think it would be wise to do the adjustment before I fit it?
Just read @snotty write up. The first section is about out removal of tbe box from the van and removal of the drag link, the second section talks about adjustment whilst on the van. Isn't there a way of finding centre of box without removing? turning steering wheel with track rod arms disconnected? Or am I ( quite probably ) missing something?
You can do it with the box on as Snotty describes yes. Disconnect drag link and find centre of box, rotate the rubber boot so that the notch lines up with the square bit of the steering box.
Is moving the boot to line up important? If you've found the centre, isn't it just a case of doing the adjustment at that point?
Thanks for replying....thought I was missing something...was trying to avoid hassle of removing drag arm...it's a job for winter anyway.
This. It’s not that important, just lets you check whether the box is centred by feeling under the van.
