Hi, I thought I'd be proactive (belt and braces) and have my heads crack tested. I am now the proud owner of two cracked heads one of which has a crack right through from combustion space to inside the exhaust port, the other has a visable crack from exhaust valve. I'm assuming money spent on repair would be better spent on new heads? Any recommendations on brands and sources? thanks for reading this
These would be a direct replacemnet if the the exhausts use copper washers, mine is GD, BUT 990 euros plus P&P is a litttle rich for my blood. https://www.ahnendorp.com/VW-Type-4...-34mm-valves-vw-t2b-baywindow-t3-vanagon.html
Using square port heads could add to the overall cost of the engine – I’d change to oval port as you need new heads anyway. Cost up getting your cracked square port heads welded, new seats, guides and new valves, springs etc. and compare it to the price of new oval port heads.
AMC heads are ok for a replacement. Perhaps not the same quality as those from ahnendorp but should give you some good service. https://www.vwheritage.com/071101061x-cylinder-head-2000cc-393-x-33mm-complete-vw-spare
Definitely not the same quality as B.A.S but half the price and if Gnasha wants square port heads AMC would be fine – but note the small valves. I’d still change to oval port unless I already had square port heat exchangers and/or exhaust.
Problem, I have purchased new valves 41/34 and have the springs to match the SCAT cam, so im looking for bare heads to save some money.
I think I have a pair of square port heads with the larger valves. I'm only about 45 miles from Leicester if you want to pop over and have a look Gnasha? Let me know if you're interested and I'll dig them out and check. £300 the pair. (Postcode PE10 0SG)
@Gnasha I think you can cut the stubs off oval port exchangers to make them square port, sure someone here did it and was ok... if you go down this line.. Sent from my SM-T580 using Tapatalk
