We recently went on a roadtrip (1400 miles) up and down the UK and at the lakes we used this driving guide. https://www.lakedistrictdrives.com/ Thoroughly recommended, due to slight time constraint we did the Ultimate one and it was fantastic, we did it across 6 days. The directions, map references etc are spot on, the guy who wrote it put a lot of time into it. Its £4 to get the download but the best thing we could have done (hence posting it here). Keswick and Windemere are a little off putting, on a nice day everyone heads there and you feel like you are swamped with people. This guide got us off the beaten track and we got to see some of what the Lake District really has to offer. It will save you hours and ensures you see some of the amazing sights. We had an amazing trip and we scaled HardKnott Pass which is not for the faint hearted, its the joint steepest road in Britain so you might want to go around it. Be nice to know if any other VWs have done it Hardknott Pass, shares the title of steepest road in England. It has a maximum gradient of 1 in 3 (about 33%)
Pah - I did Hardknott on 3 cylinders! It is a 2 litre though Love the Lakes, especially away from the crowds
