had the head on and off several times today and just cant seem to get the seals to sit right in the head .....the ones at the block end are sitting nicely every time I think I've got it, the last little tweek up with the torque wrench seems to pop them through at an angle I was tempted to leave it as the worst one still looked like it was sealing .....but when I put the rockers back on I noticed the push rod is touching the tube so the head will be off again tomorrow, and the next day, and the day after until I get them right any one got any top tips for getting them to seal correctly ???
did you stretch out the concertina on the tubes? Not too much, but it aids the sealing!! You might just need to tweak the mouth of the tube with it in situ.. as the tubes kinda sit where they sit!! If you have a close look at the case the tubes are at an angle to the case... they don't come out at right angles
thanks mate yes, stretched the tubes out a bit (new stainless ones - they were hard to stretch!!) I did notice the tubes came off at an angle ....I guess tomorrow when the head comes off I will try to tweek the ends so they come to the head squarely ......I think that is the problem I did turn a few of the tubes with the head loosened and they sat better ....but the seam wasnt at the top of the tubes like the manual said after rotating them....does this really matter?
that's just a safety thing incase a seam has a pinhole in it... tbh I've never worried about it, as modern welding is very consistent!!
You shouldn't have stretched new tubes. I think you made them too long. If you stretch old ones, just a tiny bit (1mm?) is plenty or the seals squish out. When you warm it up the seals may pop right out. The dimension is in Haynes.
All sorted now just needed a bit of a tweek .....I did try a bit of threaded bar with nuts ....not too successful .....then a socket one end...3/4 drive extension the other, and a litte persuasion ...not successful either as they were springy only took another 3 attempts ....after cleaning off all the blue hylomar from yesterday and deciding not to use it again just needed to angle the ends slightly and it did the trick ....and some little tweeks as I tightened the head
so will I just wondering what grade stainless they are ? the rocker cover seems good......the bail arm was a very tight squeeze to get on!! makes me wish I'd spent more time polishing up the head .....at least most of it will be hidden
