OK so I have developed a tap, which rapidly turned into a misfire and popping back through the carb. I fitted 8 new tappets (JK) 18 months/6000 Miles ago, replaced two that failed within six months (I actually put some of the OG ones back in!) and now have another one gone. I’m hopping mad So, where to get decent hydraulic lifters is the question? I am about to embark upon building a spare engine, it will have solid lifters Sent from my iPhone using Tapatalk
If you’re fitting new lifters to a used cam they won’t last long – cam lobe and lifter wear in together and once together they must stay together. New cam and new lifters should come from the same manufacturer. Personally I wouldn’t buy engine parts from JK – or anything else if there was an alternative supplier You’ll have more choice changing to solid cam/lifters.
To be clear, they aren’t worn, but have failed internally and don’t pump up. Oil is brand new and pressure is good. I did note that the two I removed were lightly marked where they contact the cam whereas the originals looked like brand new. Cam lobes look excellent when viewed with the lifters out. As for buying from JK, the lifters were Febi/Bilstein so would be the same from anywhere else! My original question still stands “Where can I get decent hydraulic lifters?” Sent from my iPhone using Tapatalk
Have you got the adjusters ..adjusted by the correct amount of turns. Look on Richard atwell site for instructions.
Done, done and done again! I had it running with the rocker cover off in the end, she’s clearly not pressurising. :-/ Sent from my iPhone using Tapatalk
Are you sure the oil supply is actually feeding the tappets -like is the tappet bore so worn they dont get pressure ? In which case solid lifters , and the rocker arms may not work properly. Check for slop. I believe it is possible to have sleeves fitted.
exhaust lobes on the cam will have worn off as said above. get A dial gague and check how much the lifters are actually lifting and check it’s to speck. Visually mine looked ok down the bore but had worn very evenly against the very flat new and smooth lifters Drop the oil and look for swirls of silver New lifter +used cam = ground up cam I had new lifters eat 5mm off the exhaust lobes and 2mm off the inlets in 250-300 miles backfired and zero power were inevitable.
A lot of the new hydraulic lifters aren’t much cop, I’ve had a few fail, it’s the retaining spring that seems to go.
Good point, I’ll stick a dial gauge on there, but I’m 99% that the cam is sound. When setting the clearance the resistance felt from the spring pressure is obviously the ‘lifter’ internal spring as opposed to the valve spring. Lifter bores look perfect and they were a nice sliding fit. Chinese sh**e lifters! Sent from my iPhone using Tapatalk
