Here is the hose from the fuel pump to the carburettor..

This is Halfords R9 Fuel Injection coded pipe date code 2013/12

    By fuel pump

And where it passes the exhaust riser. Cracked in the heat.

Despite appearances, this hose has not failed - the reinforcement has just been reached and it is stopping the cracks

You can see where it is discoloured and the crack has just passed the reinforcement heading inbound.

I have now fitted some Goodridge 200 nitrile stainless braided hose , reinforcing the softer nitrile with a fabric layer and then two stainless steel braids.

This was £17 a metre from VWH.
Its actually the brake line from the Goodridge brake line kits ; it is good to 2000psi and heat resistant to 150 C .

When you say exhaust riser do you mean the riser that goes to the heater pod ......oops your a sixteen hundred guy aren't you .
On my type 4 i had my fuel line crack slightly, as it was a trifle to near to the heater pod mushroom bit chucking hot air whilst shut off .

  3. Said it before, Gates R7 off the reel at your friendly motor factors. My last lot lasted almost ten years, no cracking or leaks.

Trouble is my friendly local motor factor sells to a load of skint people east side of Southampton and their no brand fuel hose is cheap but R6.

I try to use them but they also sell things like wet and dry sandpaper that leaves grit behind if you use it dry, and turns into gritty paper sludge if you use it wet.

A sort of eBay experience without the pleasure of receiving a parcel addressed to myself all the way from Shenzen..

You have just described my local motor factors to the T.. they also sell insulating tape with no adhesive properties, aérosol cans that block on first squirt etc etc. All at 5 times the price of eBay. I do try and use them for the stuff I know is OK, but it is hard work sometimes..

So Goodrich 200, Gates R7 or Codan, and
Maybe a DIY heatshield somewhere along the line?

  9. I have codan , been good fa over five years ,no cracks in or out , it wasn’t cheap though , also gave some to someone else he hasn’t had trubs , I only buy esso or shell , not supermarket fuel .

The difference between supermarket fuel and Esso or Shell is a slight difference in additives. And because of their high turnover it is less likely to contain lots of water.

So I always use Tescos, Sainsburys and maybe BP.

  11. BP every time. Rule is don’t fill up if you see the tanker in or just leaving

The 'super - unleaded' fuels, eg the 97-99 RON range, do not include bio-ethanol (currently 5%).
Re using standard 95 RON unleaded, how come modern vehicles do not suffer from rubber deterioration in the same way? Different rubber? More heat??

  13. I thought this wasn't necessarily true, depends on the brand and also where in the country you buy it

  14. AFS biofuel hose claims to be the same as fitted to modern BMW, Mercedes, VW etc, and is good for 100% ethanol. The problem for us seems to have been solved as far as fuel and breather hose is concerned. Maybe they haven't begun making filler hoses out of it yet though.

We probably have to buy all the old stock before they get round to making good stuff.

I noted on the genuine VW CV boots they put a shelf life on the packaging. manufactured 2017.. Use before 2021..
