Upper torsion arms removal procedure?

Discussion in 'Mech Tech' started by Blue Bertha, Nov 18, 2018.

  1. Hi all.
Late Bay 73-> with the bump stoppers on the front beam.
How do I remove the upper torsion arms? They're under a great deal of tension and I don't want anything exploding on me. Lower ones came out easily since they're just hanging there freely.
I read you could use a jack to push it up and hammer it out past the bump stopper. BUT when I push it with a jack, it lifts up the entire car...
Any tips would be greatly appreciated, have tried to find a video tutorial but can't find anything! That would be the best...
    Cheers everyone!

I use a jack to lift the arm enough to unload the bump stop, remove it (the bump stop), and drop the arm back down. The preload should be reduced enough to lever the arm out.

    As above.

If it lifts the front of the vehicle, get your chubbiest mate to sit in it.

  7. The LHD side actually lost the rubber stop somewhere along the way. So the arm just sits there on the metal part of the beam. Still in my opinion sitting very tight!! Couldn't get it out at all...

Put more effort into it. It will come out, they’re all like that.

  10. Feels to me like the friction between the metal and torsion arm is too much to make it budge. maybe I need to get a heavier sledge

Use a jack to reduce the pressure on the bump stop mount but not so much that the preload increases. And use a pry bar to lever the arm out.

Yes, don’t force it, if at first you don’t succeed use a bigger hammer.

I find a 4lb lump hammer does the trick.
