Hi new to the forum but i have already discovered some great tech advice on here. I have a 74 T2 aussie girl. She is in tidy condition coming from down under. However i did a top end rebuild a couple of years ago on what was already a recon type 4 1.8. I have never been confident with the reliability of the engine and its strange noises. So i have taken the plunge and obtained a 2.0 cu engine to rebuild. I am at the strip down stage at the moment so will be posting some pics and looking for tips on the rebuild soon.
Cheers for the welcome Mark. Curious about your Monday to Friday at Catcliffe. Used to live there many moons ago. Very industrial now though. The industrial area used to be mining spoil heeps. Had many happy times as a child riding honda plastics (c90) etc on there.
I work at one of the companies on the Advanced Manufacturing Park, opposite the new AMRC Training Centre. All of the spoil heaps are more / less gone from what Ive seen but I bet it was great fun motorbiking on them! We used to go for C70's back in the day, the motors used to be a great fit into Honda SS50's
Looks like I need some machining work on the engine. Number 4 big end gone. Crank needs regrind. Centre main has been hot but not siezed motor. Need to do some measuring. Good thing is bearings are all std so don’t recon its had previous work. Looking for a recomended machine shop. I have delt with Stateside before and know they do a good job. How does The VW engine co & The engine shop compare? I know Statesides web site is out of date so don’t know what there machining charges are. Possibly need align bore also.
When we did the type 4 in Gusbus, I used CoolairVW for crank regrinding and bearings, BigRich sourced everything for us luckily our case didn't need align boring. I have spoke to Jim at Stateside before but don't know his pricing though
Type 4 cases don’t usually need to be align bored, if it does, I’d buy another crankcase. The 2.0l crank, rods, B&Ps will fit in the 1800 case of course and you should be able to make a nice engine using parts from both the 1800 and 2.0l. The 1800 heads will have bigger valves than the 2.0l, if they’re part number 021-101-371S they probably have 41mm inlet and 34mm exhaust compared to 39.3mm inlet and 33mm exhaust fitted to the 2.0l.
