Best fuel hose

Discussion in 'Mech Tech' started by Jonboy_t, Nov 15, 2019.

  1. Engines currently in the shed awaiting bottom end parts to start the rebuild, so while it’s out I’m changing all the fuel lines.

What’s the best hose to replace it with? I’m thinking, whilst everything is out, I’d rather spend a few quid more and get another couple of years out of them before needing to do it all again (well, that’s the theory...)

oh, and on topic, turns out the garage I paid £300 to do all the lines 6 months ago didn’t touch most of them. Will be having a chat tomorrow

(I should add, filler neck is done and planning on doing brass t-pieces etc, not plastic.)

  2. £300 quid to change fuel hoses ....

  3. I only fit Gates

  4. Well, £300 to NOT fit them, but... :)

I was desperate at the time, away with work and no time before going away when the smell in the van got worse so had no choice. Bloody criminal, but needs must at the time!

    Gates or

Goodridge 200 :I use this stainless braided nitrile - having seen how crispy bare rubber hose goes in a fire, and how stainless steel braid protected the rubber oil hoses I have that ran above the flames...

Fire was caused by cranking engine for oil pressure through the full flow filter/cooler loop, with fuel hose inadvertently left off carburettor, but with coil not powered. Something sparked, cloud of smoke and engine bay full of flames, puddle under bus on fire. Fortunately I managed to put out the petrol with a 1kg extinguisher and remove the battery connections to stop the wiring from glowing.
One day later back on the road ..

Its about £35 a metre, Heritage sell it . For a single carburettor, 2 metres was long enough if I remember rightly.

Manufacturer : "It can be used with all synthetic lubricants, fuels, oils, coolants and alcohols including methanol and nitromethane."
You are meant to use crimped fittings but I found if you pulled back the braid and fitted the hose then pulled the braid back up the hose, your fingers got shredded, but the normal fuel hose clips then made a neat job of holding the hose on.

  6. crikey! Sounds like good stuff though. If 2m was long enough for single carb, 3m should do twin Solex I’d guess.
Haven’t got all the old stuff together at the mo, but will measure up and see what the Finance Director will sign off :)

  7. We like Codan.. volksbolts stock it with clamps to match, just bought some to do another one. Last lot looks fine still 4 years after going on.

Just be careful if you go with stainless braided when going past carbs with chokes.. it can short and spark quite a lot! Nearly toasted my beetle that way..

  8. That Goodridge website could end up costing a few bob! £11 for a pretty looking jubilee clip

    Looks amazing though :D

  10. Advanced fuel systems sell 100% bio diesel fuel lines. Changed mine 5 years ago used about 3 meters but mines id Fi. cost about £100.

Air cooled works are the experts here. You can buy hoses from here, best you can get

Not a lot, he will get them off Gumtree. Wont look the same, and one of them will be off a level crossing .

  14. Always used them too but I know bend is too tight but whole lot is suspect, fitted 4 years ago so time for replacement.
