Way too mucky to be able to see if there’s any cracks in those pics!

  2. From memory, that head stud should be seated more deeply. As long as the tops of the studs are all level, should be ok.

Thanks for the advice few questions if you have the time.

Any advice on what spring compressor to buy? Loads of different designs out there.

My b&p have no scratches or lips on them. Buy a micrometer and measure them properly? Or would you just replace? vwh do 1641 set from aa performance for £145.

Without splitting the case is it possible to add a proper oil filter?

    Thanks Pete.

  4. Those are not healthy heads. The oiley carbon is not good. To me looking at the valves, some look sunken. All the valves should stick out of the head the same amount.

I would be inclined to crack the case. You might as well do a full rebuild as the engine looks like it needs it.

  5. Give your heads a good scrub and post some more pics. Valves need a weird compressor because of their angled shape. Folk might be able to suggest a standard one. I got one from Heritage that’s kind of like the official VW tool.

I’d avoid splitting the case just yet if you don’t need to. Tricky to add a filter setup without splitting, but possible if you use an oil pump take off.

  6. I'm a few stuck exhaust bolts behind vw pete, what's the easiest way to get the Valve springs out...i've it up on a bench.

Keeping a close eye on this thread as was thinking of splitting the case as part of the rebuild.

  7. I purchased this compressor. https://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/Sealey-V...554423&hash=item2565d0e969:g:MLIAAMXQ9MVRhJcc

Did the job with relative ease. The heads have to come out though.

  8. Ah ok so I can take the heads off without removing the springs that'll make it easier.

  9. You can't take springs out without removing the head. Are you sure you want to go down this route?

  10. Yes. Unbolt the rocker shafts, take the heads off, then remove the springs.

  12. That's looks good. Any advice for a newbie? I'm using some degreaser called gunk and a toothbrush but it's taking ages

  20. Pics attached. I will keep scrubbing, hopefully clean enough for a better look. Looks like I have some kind of putting between the valves not sure if I should be concerned? DSC_1437.JPG DSC_1436.JPG DSC_1435.JPG DSC_1438.JPG DSC_1439.JPG
