  2. All the balljoint abs track rod boots have had it as have the arb bushes on the back which bakes up most of the list. He also wants the brakes to work, and a few other bits. Not the end of the world tbh.

  3. We're you there....

I do need to tidy up the rough as inner wings in fairness.

He said that all repairs should now be seam welded - even where the panels joined with spot welds during manufacture- that's new to me.....

  4. It's new tester man apparently so I thinks I have to up my game.

As it's one on the rear and both foot and handbrake eff. is poor it's probably just adjustment- I did bugger about with the brakes....

Don't think that's right, fooked if I'm going to seam weld a front arch on when I have a spot welder to make it look OG. I'll check with my tester if I remember but I'm pretty sure he'll say what I have.

  6. Tbh I thought it was a load of cobblers as well....

    Take it somewhere else?

  8. i believe reapir patche have to be seam welded all round, its what i was told by an MOT tester on a mini i had. I think if it is a straight new panel like a wing as you say @zed then spot welding as per original is fine.

As I understand it part panels have to be fully welded as you say, but whole ones it's ok to fix as originally.
The grey area may be how you fix the edge of a part panel repair, for instance if you repair a rear arch, seam weld the join but I don't see why you would want to or be forced to seam weld around the edge. The thing with testers is like many jobs they know enough to get started then learn on the job, usually under the watchful eye of an experienced tester. While they learn they tend to err on the safe side when in doubt.
That's why I'd take it somewhere else, this tester is perhaps not being overseen adequately, or not asking the right questions, or he's just a miserable jobsworth.

  10. Who knows..... I'll tidy the plug welds - I suspect that will shut him up and a learning point for the future - just not sure what the learning point is.

Hurrah for mot :). When I had my orange bay I contacted to PO as he had owned it for 30 yrs but the garage who sold it had none. He had a few bits and pieces that he said I could have for free so I went round to see him. I'd also found a photo of a collie dog I thought he may want. He told me he has dementia and can't remember a lot :( what he did say was the mechanic who had fixed his vehicles for years told him old campers not worth much and gave him £3000 for it

He also showed me a 1303 red beetle in his garage that looked immaculate. He no longer drove it and said his grandson wanted it but never came through with any cash. I was tempted but felt I had enough vehicles.

  16. It would seem that now this has an MOT and I really can't see that I'm going to use it for anything that I should try and sell it.

    U know what's next.

What does a crappy '68 bug that has an MOT sell for....?

@Baysearcher this could be your last chance to secure this appreciating classic - we'll discuss at pub later this week.

  17. Well after the beetle has been sat around MOT is due.

Quick roll around town confirms that the clutch cable and low rev running situations haven't fixed themselves....

    First job: get MOT
    Second jobs: put in garage
    Third job: changenxlutxh cable
Forth job: make it run nicely
Fifth job: new 2" narrowed beam, lower it, take off bumpers and fit t Bars new tyres to suit funky new stance then steal @giraffeinbath 's type 4 engine currently powering his garden shed and pop some wheelies
