77 Westy resto advice please

  1. Hi guys...I've had my 77 westy for over 2 years and it's now time to give it a sympathetic resto. I'm prepping the van for the sprayer to keep the costs lower, ie rubbing the whole van down, removing windows and rebuilding louvre windows, prepping pop top roof, etc So I have a few questions...1.was thinking of ditching the og wheels as they have a few dents and are currently painted cream, (chipped and scratched). Have spotted og style wheels on JK'ers for 90 quid each...would these be ok or are they poor quality? Seems better than trying to sort out the original ones.

    2. Also, the westy is sage (tiaga) green...Is there a decent brand of paint out there that won't be too expensive or should I go for the best? I'm not going for a show standard resto just a good 8 out of 10 hopefully.

    3. Also,...FBI VW in Swansea mentioned that they have used Shultz white stone-chip to spry their fibre glass pop tops...anyone tried this?
ANY TIPS AND ADVICE ON PREPPING THE BUS WOULD BE GRATEFULLY APPRECIATED...
I've got 6 weeks before the sprayer wants the bus so hope this will be enough time!
    Cheers guys....
ps ...pulled the cupboards etc out and found a letter from Californian Law Courts (dated 1984) saying that if the owner's WIFE broke her conditions of bail, they would seize the van! Bet she was a real wildcat!

  2. You could prob get your old wheels shot blasted and powdercoated for around 30 quid a wheel, how bad are they??

  3. I wouldn't want stone chip on my roof though that stuff is textured the original would of just been a gel coat or sprayed in a smooth colour!

Some people say rustoleum for the poptop. The one’s I have seen done in rustoleum seem nice enough.

OG style wheels from JK are more likely to be poor quality than good IMO. But I only buy from JK when I have absolutely no alternative and even then, only when I’m sure the part is from a known manufacturer and good quality. I’d sort the original wheels.

I bought 2k paint from Paints4u.com Limited, mixed to the VW paint code. Free delivery (in the UK). http://www.paints4u.com/aboutus.aspx

If you use Shultz stone-chip on the poptop you’ll obviously get a stone-chip finish, if that’s what you want then it should work. I used L90D pastel white 2k for the same finish as the rest of the bus.

  6. Why would anyone put stone chip on their roof ? It will look like a pile of poo. Just a light key, fill any repairs an paint with 2k.

  7. yes why not ,does what it says on the tin , protects , ye can ADD SOME THINNERS TO SMOOTH the finish

  8. Because it would look Sh$te

  9. Hi Pete, You might be guided by whoever is doing the spraying, depending on the kit and time they have they may be limited on the materials they are prepared to use. Like some others on TLB I have done my own but have had time and a suitable space. However I have agonized on materials and started a thread in the restorations forum that might help;
    REPAINTING SYSTEM DILEMMAs.

  10. I used yacht paint. Primer and Gloss, with a smooth roller. I'd give it your 8/10 mark.

  11. body work is a mine field , you could prep for months then painter says works not good enough , then have to start all over again , stone chip can be sanded
