Plastering is like Tig welding you have to keep doing all the time ore you forget the nak. Pay someone. Knocking big walls down is for pros too but at a push it's not hard to do just physical and dirty steel beams can pinch your fingers and the slate cuts go black and look like crap tattoos for a few weeks.
    Safety first

  2. When we moved in this place the walls needed replastering badly.
I couldn’t afford to get someone in and knew if I tried to plaster it myself
It would have been a hell of a lot of work to undo it.

So I approached it in the mind of using a skill set I already have.

I approached the walls the way you would vehicle body work
I filled the cracks and holes
Then flatted the whole wall back
Then skimmed the whole wall in ready mixed white skimming plaster you buy in tubs
Then when dry I flatted the whole wall back going through two grades of paper

It took forever and would have driven most people insane

But I got there in the end and the house looks so much better for it

My mate Terry is the one to watch, he was apprenticed as a lad back in the stone age. Not only does he dona nice job, he never repeat never ever drops any plaster from his spot or his hawk or his trowels. He don’t even get a bit on himself and I can’t quite work out how he does it, he never seems to get jammed in a spot where your it’s tight and you’re hawk is touching your tum.

Ozziedog,,,,,,,,, always someone worsererer and someone betterererer :);):)

  6. I agree - I did our bedroom when I moved in. It went on a bit rustic, but using a decent sized sander gave a great finish!! It's not the right way, but it looks spot on now.

    Well done
I did a similar amount of work during the same period on a Victorian house my son bought this Autumn. Now about to start an extension on my house. Sorry I never offered advice, but there are plenty on here who seem to know building. :)

  12. No worries, I did as much as I could myself and got the professionals in to do things whilst I was at work to save me time.

    Kitchen extension next
