  2. I'm also doing dry Jan. So far its the longest I haven't drunk anything since I was about 21. Usually crack about everyn3 days. Can already feel my liver saying, 'cheers mate!'

But the sum of all vices is equal, so my er, flowermate Vape for 'herbs' has been getting hammered.

    Nevertheless I'm getting loads done,

Don’t drink much anyway so haven’t bothered with the Dry January thing. Through my 20s and 30s I drank at every opportunity and never knew when to stop, the hangovers were a killer and used to pretty much wipe of the whole following day. Somewhere in my 40s I developed a brain and realised that although I love the taste of beer, red wine, gin and tonic, I don’t need to have more than one or two ( mostly!) . I don’t miss being drunk, and I certainly don’t miss the next day sick headaches.
Fair play to those of you doing the dry month, it takes some effort, but it’s good to succeed and to know that you can.

  6. Wine is the only cheap thing in France !!!!!

  7. I like a small amount each day (drink) but it is small eg half a glass of red wine with dinner. I would miss it so I am keeping it

I've gone 24 hours without any alcohol, I feel I've done my bit.
This bottle of red will go nicely with the venison steak I'm having for dinner.

  11. Ah one small slip ... just get back to Dry January today ... I'm starting to wonder why I actually drink, but then I have had no social pressure to do so since New Year.

  16. @Dazza after reading the posts, and yours, I get the picture that you are concerned about weight and diabetes, especially as your Dad is type 2. I have been a type 1 diabetic for 22 years now and depend on insulin injections to stay living.

I gave up booze 22 years ago along with sugar and anything loaded with sugar and started a good eating diabetic diet along with daily exercise. Its constant but my way of life now and I feel better for it.

Sugar is your enemy so don't have it in the house and so no sugar in tea or coffee.

You spoke about 'bordering diabetes', well I think what you mean is, if you eat (or drink) wrong your blood glucose tests high as your body can't cope with all that glucose. High glucose is harmful and will make you feel rough.

Hopefully you are getting help at your GP or better still have you had a referral to your local hospital Diabetes Centre.

These days managing Diabetes is more about self help and self monitoring of your blood glucose using an easy to use BG meter device. Its important to know what your BG is doing so you can adjust your diet and don't keep having high glucose levels.

I have an Accu Chek Mobile meter. Diabetes UK has a helpful website.

As far as I know I'm not diabetic but have a the tick boxes ticked to be so if I'm not careful.
Hopefully shedding a few stone will keep me healthier ... Can't be without sugar though...don't need it in drinks but my sweet tooth needs its fix

  18. Best keep off the sugar and you are planning to lose some weight anyway, so on the right track. Diabetes is fast becoming an epidemic and may overwhelm the NHS. That's why there is a panic regarding reducing sugar in foods in an attempt to put a brake on type 2 cases.

The real issue is the many thousands of folks who are type 2 but don't know they are and carry on eating sugar and sugary foods or drinking lots of booze and harming their health.

An example is a friend of my neighbour, they are drinking buddies, the friend said to me one day he was peeing a lot and feeling tired. I tested his BG and it was sky high. He has changed his lifestyle and kept the BG under control and he has a regular GP check up.

Please try to give up or drastically reduce your sugar intake, you will feel much better for it.

  19. Drink lots of water it’s the best thing in the world for you , when I was a kid my great grandad used to drink loads n always said ,ta me , gods medicine , flushes you thru . He was right he did bad stuff too but he lived ta 98 ,I drink a lot now as ive had stone probs but Water helps and cleans you out . Also have a few glasses before you eat it fills you up,brain signal says full o_O. I can’t talk I have a sweet tooth but you can tell when you have to much sugar it ups your yeast n you will start scratching too . Worst thing is to think diet , just a little of what you fancy does you good ,one from my old nan but she had six kids :D.
This diet fad stuff after Christmas is just another wallet grazer fa the big boys ;)

  20. Hello! I'm also doing Dry January and RED January (Run Every Day) for Mind. I'm not actually running every day, but the idea is to do something active every day, which I've achieved so far. Getting back into doing Park Runs & my weekly running club sessions. I don't feel comfortable asking people for donations, so I figured at the end of the month I will donate to Mind what I would have spent on wine. I'm not really missing drinking (though I was tempted last night when we went to a pub for my pre-birthday meal) and feeling healthier for upping the water consumption too. Keep going everyone, we've got this!
