On a sad note, my mother Helena, or Ella as my dad used to call her sadly passed away on Wednesday , Bess was the name that my dad called all his cars, i think i will change the name of the bug from Bess to Ella, or a combination of the two, Mum was 92 and the last 2 years she has been to six of the VW festivals with us sleeping in the T5 that we bought and enjoyed every single one of them and was already talking of next years events.

Here she is being fed and watered at the POP TOP eatery at Skegvegas this year . perhaps her spirit will live on in the bug and it will make us as happy as she did

Thank you for the above kind thoughts.

last night i decided to strip the front end of the car , i call that the boot as the engine, in my opinion lives under the bonnet (at the rear)
i have removed all the wiring harness and any fixtures and fittings including the fresh air box and controls
Not found any real rust horror stories so quite pleased really However as i am no electrician i took loads of photos whilst removing the harness but after a while it was evident that the harness had been cut , jointed, added to and in a general bad condition that i believe its had it and a new harness is required plus its a50 years old now so probably easier and safer all round with new one
I have no idea what the item top left of below picture is "12 VOLT" and "BOSCH" i assume they are safe if not do i replace like for like r is there a modern equivalent to replace them

HELP I AM LOOKING FOR A SPARE PART - PERHAPS THE WRONG FORUM BUT YOU NEVER KNOW?

However i have discovered that i am missing a vital piece of the fresh air control box, its a little slider that operates the opening and closing of the fresh air flaps

In the below picture to the right hand side a small white gear can be seen that when the cable (that's currently disconnected) is pulled the serrated teeth turns the gears which in turn opens the air vent.
The serrated part is missing for the left hand side also a spring clip from below it that holds it against the gear wheel is missing

I don't think the part is "handed" as the left had one is mounted upside down compared to the other

Anyone knows of the ways and means for me to get one, its appreciated.

I am hoping to take the engine out over the next few days and mount it on a engine stand. I today bought an absolute bargain Sealey ES550 stand . I have noted on various builds and videos , all VW engines i see are mounted on a completely different mount to the one shown in below picture, has anyone used such a stand and will it be possible for me to mount the engine on the Sealey mounting face?

You’ll be able to mount the engine on the stand (I use a similar type), obviously you won’t be able to split the crankcase but you can remove the heads, barrels and pistons.

Not done too much to the beetle but i have been thinking about the wiring harness, The main harness runs from front to rear holding cables within what looks like a thin plastic sleeve , the wires are in different thicknesses, looking at a wiring diagram they range from between 0.75 and 2.5 mm .

Would it be in order to buy wires of the correct colors but of all the same maximum thickness(2.5) , i know it may cost a little more but it makes ordering the wire a lot easier . I know there are some thicker wires but they don't run through the main harness ?
