Can't get my oil filter off!!!

Discussion in 'Mech Tech' started by darron smith, Jul 22, 2018.

  1. In the past I have given the camper van to the garages to service. Today I went to do an oil change and for the life of me I can't get the oil filter off. I have a T2 SA microbus 1800 engine and the oil filter is in an awkward position and I can't get it off be turning anticlockwise by hand and my oil wrench does not fit between the casing, Tips, tools?

  2. If you are planning to replace the filter just bang a screwdriver into the side and turn.

    Bhubesi and dubsurftones like this.
  3. Wrap a loop of webbing strap or similar
Wind it round tightening with screwdriver
Using screwdriver to get a good hold
    It’s a Cleaner option:)
That’s what we do on our plant machinery etc
But might not be possible in confined space

  4. Bang 2 screwdrivers in the base opposite each other and get a bar or spanner between them to use as a lever

I sometimes use a pair of 12" Knipex pump pliers. They open wide enough to pinch indentations in an oil filter and get a grip on it without puncturing it.

  6. Works for me too..just done my type 4

  7. Had the occasional one stick but probably just oily and couldnt get a grip. Used pump pliers as per above. They cant be that tight unless someones used a box spanner. Only tighten by hand when you replace and a smear of oil on the seal.

  8. Or the garage has never changed it and just gave it a wipe off ????

  9. Tried the strap technique failed, bottled out on sticking 2 screw drivers through because I want to get away on Tuesday and not sure if \I can drive with 2 holes through my oil filter, will look for a tool, as I am the man who has got the kit and does not know what to do with it, although I don't know what a pump plier is. Thanks for your advice again.

  11. Get some rubber gloves on, clean up the filter and give it a good turn by hand.

  12. Water pump pliers look a bit like a parrot, come in different sizes you need 9 inch

Not seen that before - nice bit of kit that'll work every time.

  17. It does - Ive always used a strap type before but that tool is all you need for the bus

The Bosch filters have a nut shaped bit sticking out the bottom
