Charcoal Filter Query

Discussion in 'Mech Tech' started by Bumblebee, Jul 20, 2018.

  1. hi all,

Charcoal filter fitted to my type 4 engine has 3 connections. 1 connects to the fuel breather pipes, 2 connects to the air intake filter, 3 is suppose to connect to the fan shroud ie 3 pushes the air through the charcoal filter to dilute the petrol fumes and force the hydrocarbons back into the carbs.

However there is nowhere on the type 4 engine to connect pipe 3, the single port on the left hand side of this image.

    Hence 3 is not connected!

    Any solutions?

    Cheers

  2. Could you post photos of your charcoal filter fitted to a type 4 engine please to see how the pipes are connected. This has got me stumped!

  3. on the type 4 engine there should be a little male outlet pipe for the charcoal filter connection, it is just behind the coil on the left see pic. Carefull when you take the filter apart, watch out for the spring. I made new cloth filters inside using fish tank filters and new activated carbon from a ebay, used in fish tank filters. 4. The depends on the fan housing, if you still have the hole for type 4 timing adjustment with the original plug source the one with a pipe outlet or drill and tap the fan housing and screw in a hose tail.

  5. That’s guys, both of what you say makes sense. Here is a photo of mine, it’s blanked off so would neeed drilling. Alternatively I could do what @Bigherb suggests.

What I can’t understand is why is it not already like that and with the pipe not connected to the charcoal filter does this mean that potential petrol fumes could escape from the carbon filter when the engine is switched off.

The reason I say this is I’ve replaced all breather and fuel lines, carb gaskets, and intermittently still smell fumes when the engine is off.

    Cheers

  6. Europe didn't use that type of carbon canister the tank was only vented to the air filter so the outlet in the fanhousing was left blind and no hose stub fitted.
Alternative outlet for the carbon filter was where the plug for checking the timing was, the screwin plug had a hose outlet the easiest method if yours is blanked is to drill and tap here.

  7. I don't have the charcoal filter but I did have fuel smell problems a bit back. It was a combination of float and float valve issues and also on another occasion a leak on the carb drain plugs.

  8. The vacum on the air filter has two nipples one is 13mm the other 7 . The small one goes to the distributor ,and is tee d off then going to the air box . 76 has the diaghram on the left side . And is 2 cm, smaller.then.77-79 it's on the opposite side of the air box that there there was one for a few months only .but normally same Sade as engine. This is so at high revs the gas is burned off ,and not pushed into the atmosphere. At starting it is closed so the engine doesn't get rich .you should here a clunk ...when it opens . If vented gas cap is installed you don't have to worry about the Airbox and block it all off . But emissions at the time where getting picky .mcalifonia models had a big fire extinguisher type of looking extra canister . Put a vented cap on it if you still smell it
