Check fuel flow...

Discussion in 'Mech Tech' started by S1mon, Sep 18, 2017.

  1. Just a quick question need to check fuel pump flow etc with out starting flooding etc.

disconnect coil from dizzy and turn over for a few seconds with pipe in a fuel canister of some sort?

    does that sound right?.

    Thanks!

If there are sparks .. it will find a way.. I was lucky it only took a day to fix the results of the fire... a disconnected fuel pump sprayed its contents of fuel near the coil when I forgot..

  4. Or if you've got breakers, just disconnect the green lead from the dissy.

Hi S1mon, heres one that I do which is great if there's two of you. If you keep the pipe just inside the bottle and hold it there it'll be shielded from sparks any how. You could go crazy and put a top back on the bottle with a very tight hole for the pipe if you wanted too.

    Ozziedog,,,,,, I hope that worked.

  6. If you've disconnected the ignition...no sparks ;).

Stick the fuel pump output hose in a jamjar. Or up your jumper.

To get an approximate measure of fuel flow, you need to ensure no sparks are present and then measure the amount of fuel delivered over, for example, a ten second period into a jam jar.

Measure said amount of fuel, eg, 100ml and multiply by 6 (10s x 6 = 600 millilitres per minute).

Its not accurate but it will give you an idea of the pump performance.

We have done it with hydraulic oil pumps in the past when we knew something was amiss & it gave us a comparison to work with for further investigative work.

Pressure gauge without flow is not a reliable way of checking the ability of a pump to deliver fuel. Its a good test to check you havent got too much or too little pressure. Checking the flow is needed too.

  10. If you've got a Gunson's vacuum gauge (or equivalent), it'll measure fuel pressure fine. Just need a nylon t-piece.

  13. You could certainly try measuring fuel pressure with a ColourTune. Let us know how you get on ;)

  14. For the fuwel measurin you'll need a buthol bit, I got one but it a bit of a squeeze, a bit of fingerin an it goes in lovely though
