Chimney Sweeping

Discussion in 'General Discussion' started by orangefeeling, Sep 22, 2017.

  1. Twice a year I go through the 'joy' of finding a chimney sweep to do the single open fire and chimney I have.

Every time they remove a small sprinkling of soot (I burn dry wood and build hot fires which seems to keep it clear) and every time is a massive hassle making appointments, not turning up, making a mess etc etc.

Which got me thinking, for less than a single sweep I can buy some quality rods and brush. For anything more stubborn I always have the 6 year old who could do with earning her keep...

Anyone clean their own chimney? Thoughts? Recommendations of a decent sweep in West Cheshire?

During the miners strike one of the lads bought some gear and started a little business to earn some cash whilst on strike. Think the main think is to make sure the dust sheet is taped up well and you have a good vac that attaches to the sheet.
You need to stunt the youngsters growth if your going to use her

  3. I used to do do mine when I had a log burner. Just got a set of brushes online for around £30 and gave them a sweep twice a year.

You'll need a decent vacuum that'll need a damned good clean afterwards and a good size sheet to stop the muck going everywhere.

  4. I had mine swept by a pro once
A few days later we had a fall of soot that filled a few buckets
I bought rods and a brush and have swept them myself ever since
I've saved a fair whack of money and know a proper job has been done

I have always had mine done professionally to get the online certification.
Really glad we did too as we had a chimney fire last year and the first thing the insurance company asked was.. Do you have it swept by a professional sweep. I guess that would have been their get out clause!

  14. I think that chimney might need a liner once you've finished!

  15. Nope the only dead pigeons in my house are those I've shot
The ones with the numbered rings on the leg are the tastiest

I have unblocked a few. I did one in a Georgian mansion that they had filled with the bricks from the other chimney tops that they had taken down. That was an experience I can tell you, three skip loads of rubble in a posh kitchen. The Lady of the house was not amused, she only wanted a arga fitted.

  17. When we moved house we used a chimney sweep from Redditch, good bloke very clean worker, second year you couldn't meet a more useless miserable sod same bloke!
will buy some brushes and have a go myself

Probably cos most of his customers have bought their own brushes
