Correct Universal Plug for Stereo?

Discussion in 'Mech Tech' started by secondtimearound, Jul 22, 2018.

  1. Morning!

Whilst the windscreen is out and dash top removed, I'm getting all the wiring done I can. I'm not ready to choose a stereo yet, so thought I'd wire in the plug that can then connect into whichever I choose.

Been a long time since I've replaced a stereo, so I'm assuming the ISO plugs on eBay will do the job? Are they typically male or female on the van side of the wiring? Also sub and reversing camera input would be a separate connection in the back of the head unit?

    Thanks in advance!

  2. The ISO connectors are fine. It’s a good idea to fit them, rather than wiring direct. General rule: anything that’s a source of power (12V supply, speaker outputs) uses the female connector, to avoid accidental shorts.

Other stuff: a multiway car wiring connector should do.

Camera connectors etc arent part of the ISO connector so will plug in separately.

But any ISO connector with wire tails will sort the 4 speakers and power. Then the fun starts working out which 12 volt feed goes to which ISO wire .. they arent consistent amd one needs to be ignition switched and the other connects to 12V permanently to backup the memories.

Also take care. My Sony head unit has two power off states. In the first one it draws as much power as when switched on playing music quietly, and is ready to be turned on by infrared remote control. In this state it draws 0.25A or flat battery in a couple of weeks left alone. In the other state it really turns off. Its the same as removing the fascia which I usually do even though its only worth £100, it turns off properly.

  6. I would just to the speaker and power terminations. Not all radios use an ISO plug
