Crankcase open! Crankshaft removal??

Discussion in 'Mech Tech' started by nooster, Jul 29, 2014.

  1. Good morning, hope everyone's well!

I've just opened the crankcase for the first time after half an hour of hitting wooden blocks, phew.

Is the crankshaft held in by anymore than a pushfit? seems not to be budging... rubber mallet on the nuts at either end or something else? Will it take a hammering?

    Cheers!

  2. It just lifts out

  3. What engine?

But as Mick said, it lifts out... They do sometimes need a little tap from a rubber mallet to get them to pop out!!

  4. Its a type 1 1600

There's wiggle at the flywheel end, none at the other...

  5. Should just lift out.

  6. Thanks - will let you know results

  7. Nope! Still not moving.

There is just 1/2 a crankcase and the crankshaft left with no connecting rods attached.
I'm hitting it medium hard with a normal hammer (+wood) on both the end nuts and through the cylinder holes onto the shaft itself.
The shaft has some play at the pulley end but seems stuck on the bearing closest to the flywheel.
I could of course use a bigger hammer etc if this is appropriate, but I'm concerned that the shaft should just 'pull out' a la haynes - and hammering hard might cause damage. I'm guessing there's nothing to attach the bearing shell to the crankcase (dowels?) etc?

Any more advice very much appreciated - thanks :)

  8. Just the 4 bearings, 3 round and 1 half. They sit on the dowels but they wont stop it, it is just the bearings tight in the case

  9. Someone might have installed the crank using bearing fit, between the bearings and the case... Goes off a bit like super glue

  10. So just a bigger hammer and more effort? any worries about damage? ;-)

  11. Looks like it... As long as you use a wooden block, then you shouldn't damage anything :)

  12. Ta :) help very much appreciated as always

  13. cracked it! well not literally thankfully - its off.

cheers to Paul, Mick and Snotty. Very kind.

    Piccys to follow soon......

  14. End bearing stuck on the shoulders?

  15. yes, needed a good few proper whacks with a heavy hammer
