CV joints

Discussion in 'Mech Tech' started by pkrboo, Apr 14, 2018.

  1. The CV joint I put on last year is knocking, I have taken it out and had a look and the grease was like treacle.(came with the joint in a squeezy tube) Vert weird.

Anyway i have taken it all apart, put Lith moly grease in and out it back together.

Problem is the joint doesn't seem to want to move now. Have I put too much grease in and "hydro locked" it? Should I just fit it and let the van make it move?

Pics are of black treacle like grease. Your can see some grey Lith moly grease further down

They are usually quite tight, be fine, you can’t put them together wrong and make it go together

  3. Took it apart and out it back together and it moves freely now. However it's also loose and when I put it back on its Knockng like a goodun.

So that part lasted less than a year!!

Time to find a good quality part

Take care that when you fit the new ones, you fit them the right way round. There is a leading edge on the inner race that makes it just that little bit easier to slide onto the splines on the shaft.

  5. Yep chamferred edge in to driveshaft first

The lock up state is one of the races in the CV joint being rotated by 60 degrees with respect to fully flexing and sliding state. .
Need to check for this because it will not last long if you do manage to fit it like this. In this state, the grooves on the inner and outer races of the CV joint are in the same direction rather than crossing at 90 degrees.

If your bus is lowered the angle of the drive shaft means it is impossible to bolt it up like that. I am not so sure for stock, and I have a suspicion some CV joint disasters are due to mis-assembly of the joint then when you hit a bump it comes to pieces and goes crunchy.

^ This. I just stripped mine and found you could put them together 2 ways - but only one where they move freely. Must check if chamfered edge is on the inside as noted by @pkrboo .

  8. When I assembled one of my CV joints wrong it would not fit on stock bus (thank goodness). Despite me hitting it with a big hammer;)

  9. Right then, I forgot to order a CV joint and time is short.

Best place for decent quality CV joint please.

    GO!!........
