WANTED Damaged/Seized 1600 engine.

Discussion in 'Late Bay Parts Classifieds' started by Dexter, Oct 5, 2017.

  1. Got all the books and manuals. The Jim muir works best for me but even then I'm reluctant to start fixing what ain't broke.
I watched Simon clean some engine parts at techenders and thought mmmm what if I could have an old block to work on?
More than willing to put the hours in etc but I just think I would have more confidence if I had this opportunity. A book and a torch can only get you so far and the bus is running sweet.

The "How to keep your VW alive" is BRILLIANT for colouring in. :)

  3. Sorry @davidoft I must have missed this one! I would really like to get my hands on one asap so I can set it up in my cellar and have a good old go at stuff over the winter months. The ideal is that by April Techenders I can do most maintenance jobs etc on my own rather than rely on @Lasty's good will for another year.

How many pennies would I need to throw in your direction for you to throw one on a pallet?

If anyone lives nearer to Yorkshire with one now is a good time to shout out! :)

  4. Might be worth trawling the beetle forums as well .

1600`s are sought after but knackered 1300 beetle units are usually replaced by something bigger so i`d have a gander on there mate - they`re basically all the same apart from capacity . A 1600 would be nice if you need to rob some parts but for learning the basics any old lump will do - the more complete the better

The Muir book isn't as good as the one I linked, his is generalised on keeping a VW going. Tom Wilson's book is specific to the type 1 and type 4 motors, and it goes into great detail.

I bought an old, knackered type 4 and followed the book through (a bit like what you want to do):

The motor now runs very well, kicks out 96bhp at the flywheel and has ran sweet for two years now :D

  10. @CollyP I also saw him nearly blind himself with some contraption attached to a cordless drill whilst cleaning some barrels!
@MorkC68 . What a fabulous thread!! I have no idea what you are talking about most of the time but the abundance of pictures is a goldmine. I am on my third Guinness reading it . Well done that man!

 Thanks :) All that was done through reading, taking apart, asking on here and checking in triplicate. Cleanliness is god when you build back up. My suggestion, don't rush and lean what each component is about, know its tolerance and learn about its history (bearing sizes tell a story) and if in doubt, ask!

Seriously if you want to borrow it to play with for a few months you're welcome, it needs a crank regrind and align bore, heads have got cracks so you can't do it any harm, I will get it rebuilt one day though, it's in Cheshire.

  15. Great offer Flakey but I would be scared that it would be totally wrecked by the time i finish bending rods and threading screws!
I need to be confident i'm not costing anybody any money.
