As you pointed out in your first post, problems are caused by neglect, poor set up, lack of knowledge and carp kit. There should be no reason that a balanced and well specified leisure system should cause issues on charge if it's done properly and regularly maintained. But, there's no need to leave a system on long term charge. Just disconnect the terminals and top up every few weeks. And don't mix different battery types. Different chemistries have different charging parameters.

This! I had a c-tek go faulty (got a replacement under guarantee) but I still wouldn't trust it to be left on for weeks on end. Just charge up every few weeks to prevent batteries going flat.
