Door Locks - possible dumb question

Discussion in 'Mech Tech' started by Phooey, Nov 15, 2017.

  1. On my van I've never had the keys for the door locks (its always been kept in a secure place during the resto) subsequently I've bought new door handles and complete with lock barrels. Both the drivers side and rear passenger door have pull knobs that enable the doors to be locked but the passenger side doesn't. As it happens the passenger door is the firs I've tried to replace the handle on and when the new one is in place I can't lock it from the outside with the key. Having spent a while on it I thought i'd ask TLB's collective conscious if the door does lock that way or is it one of those where the door has to be locked whilst open and the pushed closed (hope the makes sense). Didn't want to start on any of the other doors until I got somewhere with this one.

    Thanks in advance.

  2. Front passenger and drivers door can be locked with a key from the outside
Front passenger and drivers door can be locked by pushing the inside knob in and then holding the external trigger in when shutting from the outside
Sliding door can be locked from outside with a key
Sliding door can be locked from the inside with a little catch thingy push it down to cover the red bit

  3. If you have a hole where the pull knob should be it may be possible that the metal rod is stuck inside the door and causing the lock to jam.

All doors can be locked and unlocked from outside using the key.
All doors can be locked and unlocked from inside using the pull knob / slider catch.

  5. Cheers guys, the passenger door doesn't have a hole for a pull knob, looks like its some other problem then if it should lock from the outside. I when I turn the key I can feel it catch and lift but other then that it doesn't catch on anything and just drops back down into 'open'. If I turn the key the other way nothing happens. Anyone got a good diagram of how the lock barrel marries up with the rest of the lock as it looks like its on ok?

  6. The locks/barrels etc changed several times during the Bay window production run.
Are you sure you bought the correct ones for your vehicle?

  7. When I phoned the supplier I told him that it was a 78 double cab so I hope he sent the right ones - not that it always happens I know

  8. There's no hole for the pull-up knob at all?

Possible you've got a lock mech from an earlier bus where the locking arrangement was a tab on the inside door handle, rather than a pull-up button?

On the kombis, on the passenger side you could push the button down, hold the handle trigger in and shut the door: the door would stay locked. This didn't work on the driver's side, to prevent you locking the door with the keys still inside.

Earlier doors didn’t have the door knob by the window or the hole for it.they had a catch that was part of the internal handle.
You’ve probably got the wrong ones.

  10. Sounds like that might be the case Snotty I'll have to give that a try

  11. I'm not sure what year they swapped from the handle flipper-tab thing to the push-down button. Presumably the internal lock mechs were different to accommodate the change.

You could have an early door latch mechanism, where did the latch come from ? Do you have chrome inner pull handles ?

    Pudelwagen and snotty like this.
  13. The part numbers for the 3 different internal lock mechanisms (near side) inside the door are:
    211 837 015 E - August '67 to July '68.
    211 837 015 G - August '68 to July '74
    211 837 015 H - August '74 till end of production.
Off side - substitute 016 in each case.
So for your '78 you should have the H suffix.
