Short eng will be a short block.
Ask about for recommendations before deciding where to take it would be my advice...

That engine looks clean top side.

The H Xchangers usually show oily if you have leaky head covers.

  5. Attached is a photo (sorry for the poor quality arrow) showing the only sign of oil I can see inside, any ideas?

That’s where you’d spill it if you missed the filler..

  7. thats the toilet lol

  8. Nah, I'm positive that wasn't there when we set off, and I've not put oil in it yet, however I am wondering how I get oil in with that positioning

Pull the fat black pipe off by the filler and check it isn’t sludged up.

  10. The cardboard style pipe? Pulled them both off and nothing, but I'm guessing you didn't mean that one?

He means the rubber pipe that's about 20mm to the right of the filler.

  12. Also the back part that the oil goes in is separate to the alternator stand, there is a seal between. could be leaking there

    Ditch the oo9 dizzy

  13. Couldn't pull that off. Did notice something though, apparently this van was yellow before being resprayed blue, just found a green mount in the engine bay holding fuses so I guess it started life in racing green before that, the irony

Looks like a puddle of fuel on the tinware below the dizzy and the fuel pipe to the pump looks wet and dripping !!!

  15. I noticed that when I took this photo! Definitely a puddle, probably fuel. Won't be dripping though, I think I left half a tank at Worksop services and burned the rest getting home. This is job 1

Welcome to the forum fella

  17. Welcome aboard!

Your bus definitely seems to have started life as a Devon conversion and has gained some Westfalia interior bits since. Leaking fuel (as I'm sure you must realise) is a critical fault and can cause a major fire at any moment if it drips onto the hot exhaust for example! Read this:
    http://thelatebay.com/index.php?threads/avoid-a-fire-everyone-should-read-this.38433/

Replace all of your fuel pipes as you don't know their history and or what grade has been used. It is unusual to lose so much oil, however sometimes on a long run and especially if a lot of hills are involved it could potentially use a bit especially if driven hard (a definite no no with these engines). Had the oil only just been filled with new when you first checked it? If so then potentially the 'loss' is just it being circulated about the engine, often a top up might be in order. If it keeps on losing then there is a leak. Does it appear smoky and therefore burning the oil? Obviously check for drips / leaks (these will be obvious when it stands for a while) When the fuel issue is fixed, run it while parked and see if any is leaking and where from. Is the drain plug / plate correctly fitted? It could possibly need a replacement gasket.

As for filling the oil in such an awkward position, you will need a funnel with a flexi-pipe attachment - readily available at motorist shops. The engine was designed for the Beetle and as such much easier to fill with oil in that position. Putting the same engine in a cupboard was not the most practical thing VW ever did, but saved on developing a separate engine... Later vans have an inspection hatch in the top of the engine bay, but it does't look like yours does I am afraid. :)

  18. Thanks for all the wisdom. Popped in to LVH and it turned out Paul was near my house anyway so he popped to mine.
Engine needs to come out so it's getting booked in there for the oil and fuel and an inspection.

    Nearly on the road!

  19. I didn't notice oil drip on my engine until I painted the cylinder covers yellow (your arrow) and I found a small hole in the breather box. it landed just where your arrow is pointing....

  20. Hi - welcome from West Lancashire. You can get a 1 litre oil filling bottle with a bendy spout. Just fill, screw on the cap and invert it and oil goes into the oil filler without any spillage - I think JK do them but they are cheaper on fleabay.
