Fitting aftermarket seats

    Hi

As above, I'm hoping to buy some replacement aftermarket seats, as my current vw seats are fiercely uncomfortable on long journeys and have no support and too bouncy.

I have seat runners on the drivers side, but no sliders on the passenger side. It looks like aftermarket seats were bolted in, but these are no longer in.

Would I need to buy the buttysbits seat brackets, then bolt these in on the passenger before bolting in aftermarket seats so it's adjustable ie like drivers seat, for better half?

Do the buttysbits seat brackets bolt in?

    Thanks Julian

You need to decide what seats you're fitting first. They may have brackets / runners already attached.

  3. Which bay do you have ? Mine is a 78 so T25 seats are a straight swap and lots available cheap

  4. Your probably find that most secondhand seats come with runners attached.
You may need to cut out the existing and bolt in new spreader plates to accommodate the new ones. This is exactly what I did when I fitted my Porsche tombstones

Hi I'm going for Mazda mx5 Seats, they have Mazda runners and Was going to follow Rob.e write up to fit.

    http://thelatebay.com/index.php?thr...without-drilling-any-holes-in-your-bus.70375/

But realised my passenger seat doesn't have runners, only those clip things

Is it too much ball ache to fit runners to the floor, then fit the seats to some vw seat bases on the passenger side?

I was thinking for safety and to use the adjustment on the slider to fit to runners on the passenger side.

I'll be buying a pair (still looking for so e cheap late bay seats) to cannabilise them for the runners and base and just slide the drivers side in.

But am stuck for the passenger side. The P.O. just drilled and bolted a previous seat in. I don't have those, just the standard 1979 late bay seats (which I'll keep just in case) I return to stock.

Hi chris, Sorry forgot to say I have a 79 devon moonraker. How did you fit your oassenger seat in, as thetes inly the clip in the bulkhead etc???

  6. My original VW front seats were well worn and needed replacing. A rather too quick search on here suggested Saab seats a good alternative so some were sourced and fitted (£20 on eBay plus 80 miles to fetch them).

Very comfortable but too high, my legs were almost wedged against the underneath of the steering wheel. Also my line of sight was just below the top of the windscreen!

Next came a pair of Vectra seats, £50 from a breakers yard. Again very comfortable but only slightly less bad than the Saab ones.

So both the Saab and the Vectra seats followed the original seats to the tip.... :(

Next came the present seats, again on recommendation from this fine forum ;) A bit overpriced at £85, but these MR2 Mk1 seats are just the right height for a Bay camper. :)

Lesson learned here is that the seats' "height" above the base fittings is critical as Bays are unusual in that you're effectively sitting on top of the front wheel arch. This means normal car seats are unsuitable, and you'll need "sports car" seats which tend to be much lower height.

Meanwhile, my long search for a brand new passenger swivel base came good. Seemingly costing around £140 new, it was only a matter of time before one became available much cheaper, new yet unfitted, from eBay. At just £63 delivered, it went some way to compensate me for the seat sagas!

First came the removal of the half partition with a grinder. Then ( as per VW's own recommendation) a small triangular bracket was welded in to stiffen up the pillar. Then a bit of tidying up with the remaining bits of carpet left over.

The result of all this gives a much better drive, and a huge increase in useable space when the passenger seat is swivelled around to face the rear.

Exactly ^^^ this. I've been on the look out and have been also researching seat replacements and am just about cheesed off with my original seats, I will keep them to go with the van when I'm gone. I'm sixty one years old so I wriggle a lot, I'm at least sixteen stone so a tad over weight and I'm six foot one tall so going on those numbers I'm almost round :(. My seats are great for going up the shops and anything less than a half an hour. After that when I wriggle the springs make protesting type noises and when I went up to VW Action the other week from Bristol and we got marooned in virtually stationary traffic outside Oxford, I think we was in the vans and cars for at least a five hour stint , just guessing, might have even been more, it certainly felt like it. I'm six one but very short legged as in a twenty eight inch inside leg, so long bodied. This means I'm tall sat down about seven foot I guess. Now this means I can't have anything taller in the seat department or I'll be out the sun roof. I've got my eye on some Mazda MX5 sporty ish car seats and these look like the way for me. Apparently it's an mot requirement to have the driver seat as adjustable but not the passenger seat. On my passenger seat there are two fixed positions and the back clips to the bulkhead but mine is an Early . MX5 seats seem to be readily available and some from imports have speakers in the headrests which sounds pretty awesome. Anyone else have these MX5 seats ? I also struggle as to where to measure them because the sporty types have generally got a raised bolster to the sides of the seat pad which makes measuring very awkward.

Ozziedog,,,,,,,,,, is there a softness type measurement?:)

Ooooohhh Ted, I do like them, and I'm guessing some hens will be wearing dentures and some rocking horses might be needing wet wipes. Go on then tell me you got ten sets and I can have a pair for a tenner. Thanks for showing me, they are rather special.

Ozziedog,,,,,,, How have I not seen these before?:)

  14. Me neither, never heard of these before this thread. o_O

I'm glad about that then . I was feeling just a bit dim as I thought I was fairly well rounded with VW bits and pieces.

Ozziedog,,,,,,,,, BUT!!! Every day's a school day innit.;)

  16. As it happens I know of a man with a set for sale

  17. Pm your number and I will pass his contact details on, think he was looking for around £450 as they are in good condition

  18. Ive heard MGF seats are a good option, and I'm looking out for a set to try as my original seats (which I actually find ok) are finally starting to crack and I want to preserve them. I would think anything from a small coupe with a low roof line should logically have low runners but I will be doing lots of measuring!
