Gears are really annoying!!!

  1. I have no idea how to do this. Can you give me a heads up as to where tomstart.

  2. As the others have said, check your clutch cable first.

  3. See pic in @3901mick 's post above. Lie on your back and shimmy underneath the bus near side in front of the rear wheel, find the gearbox (should be the thing connected to the wheels via the drive shafts) you should be able to see an arm pointing upwards with a wing nut and cable attached - check the bit of the cable that is exposed, if its frayed then this is your problem. Fix is to replace the clutch cable. If isn't frayed try a few turns on the wing nut see if that helps.

Bare in mind it could be frayed pretty much anywhere along its length and you can only see a short section of it.
If a few turns on the wingnut sorts it, it may be worth changing the cable anyway as that's a sign it giving up the ghost.

Left or right hand drive bus?
Most likely fraying cable at the front, has your bus got a belly pan on under the front that covers the area between the chassis rails, 5 bolts hold it on , remove and some will be revealed, if it's lhd you'll see the underside of the clutch pedal mechanism but the cable is inside the chassis member!

  7. What ? Frayed inside his member !

  8. I can't believe that no one has mentioned the clutch cable , come on !

  9. My vote, clutch cable, just had to do mine and I think someone had chopped a bit off the rear end of the metal pipe as the flexible conduit didn't reach which meant the cable was slowly sawing it's way through the pipe. A bit of work with some ally bar, drills, small hobby lathe and a bit of a polish and all sweet. Even with all the extra messing about managed with just jacking that corner up a bit, pretty straightforward

  10. Crikey!! I think I will call the garage man. Still I am going to follow your advice and try and locate the cable etc. Thanks for the great advice.

    You won't need a garage.
It's literally a case of pulling the old one out and threading the new one through....

You really don’t need to, even a girl can check and change a clutch cable:), but if you do call the garage man don’t tell him you think you have ‘the dreaded gearbox collapse’. He won’t know what that is but he will see £££’s.
