  1. Hi All

Thinking about doing this and maybe touching into top of Spain aswell

Just after the pro's and con's of getting there, drive all the way or ferry or tunnel ??

BTW we have a Cal 72 import si in avatar

  2. Something I want to do myself!
Give the van a decent service and full health check would be my priority and a stack of cash for petrol! Dont forget France is a massive country so budget for a long trip!
    Keep us posted soundslike fun.
@lost-en-france is a good expert on France

  3. Depends on where you live.
I go lots but start from different places.

  4. Don't go to Mick's with a 1600, he'll "forage" bits off of it! ;)

  8. we tried most of the ferries ,even the Hull to Rotterdam [dive] but we like the Portsmouth to Roscoff with Brittany ferries [better class of people],get to Portsmouth late at night and wake up in France refreshed...

From there it`s six hours on non toll roads to La Rochelle...[if you don`t break down]

Of course my house/garden is always open to weary campers...

I have an old pal who has bought a farmhouse in Brittany.
We are planning a trip to visit him in the spring, for us in south Somerset, the alternatives are Portsmouth or Plymouth to France, it all depends on the fares closer to the time, which way we choose.
@lost-en-france If we go to Roscoff we might well drop by if that's ok.

  10. Tony , I am between La Rochelle and Saintes a bit further down...[where the sun is]

  11. Are you coming this year ?

  12. I did Plymouth to roscoff from Tyneside. I did stop at Bristol on way down.

I ve worked out since that it's cheaper to go via Dover, if you don't mind the driving. I'm off to France and Germany this year and will probably go via Dover even though I can sail to Amsterdam from round the corner.

  13. Hull to Rotterdam might be a option? save you the drive to dover...

  14. You are in La Rochelle?! Wow friends of ours emigrated there a few years ago. Nice place we camped up the road at a Les Castels camp site :La Garangeoire

  16. It's only £95 via Dover and £540 via Amsterdam. I would guess it's £300 plus via hull and its a 3hr drive at least to Hull.

  17. we was visiting Yorkshire ,so hull to leeds was good ,but now I would do the longer drive in England ,the hull ferries are full of coach parties ,when I woke up in Hull, I had a such a hangover ...:(

I suspect in the next 6 weeks or so, again early summer and in school holidays (maybe with the Gooners) :)

  19. @VWT2GEL where are you travelling from, there's deals to be had if you know where and when. :)

  20. We live in Saffhampton so Pompey on ferry would be our best bet I suppose?
Bit worried about breaking down as we have no mechanical knowledge, we have only done Dorset,Devon & I.O.W in her so far.We have got the all singing & dancing top RAC cover but after reading between the lines it's not really worth the paper it's written on

Looking at doing a 10 day road trip
