It means don't drive too slow in a high gear...better review high than low.

    Don't drive, for example, at 25mph in 3rd gear....use 2nd gear.

You'll soon learn. Plenty of info and help on here.
Very basic checks are just investigating any petrol fumes and feeling for any wet areas and loose connections around the fuel filter, carb/s and hoses between them.
The hoses perish over time and are a primary source of fires so it's worth checking as you familiarise yourself with the bus. If they're old they're worth the effort of changing, the risk is not worth taking. The trickier ones are around the tank; the filler neck and breather pipes, but at least have a look at the easy to reach ones.
I also have a household smoke and carbon monoxide alarm in the bus for peace of mind, not just for the obvious but because the hot air path runs via the engine bay and heat exchangers around exhaust pipes.
Not wanting to worry you but best to mitigate some of the risks that an old bus poses with some easy steps.

  11. Welcome from Manchester and good luck for your trip to Cornwall - seems to be the spiritual home of Bays. You get treated like royalty in a Bay.
