so last week when I filled with fuel it started pouring out. Called rac as had no tools on me as had just collected it after having interior done. Turned out lid at top of fuel tank where fuel gauge bit goes was not on properly so just fuel just came out over the top. when he tightened fuel gauge said full, which made sense as I has just filled up but after 3 hours of driving was still full. After topping up fuel it went below empty and disappeared. Any ideas why? also got a new cigarette lighter, how do I fit it. Was taken out by welder so no idea which wire it connects to... What should I be looking for
the problem was the lid to tank was not on properly so is fine now tightened. Fuel just overflowed out as lid was not on.
Sounds like the float has dropped to the bottom of the tank. Any live fuse will feed the cigarette lighter, just pick one of the top spade terminals that is vacant on the fuse board and run a live from the ciggy lighter to that terminal. Probably best to check what fuse rating you need. It should earth itself on the dash when you fit it and that will give you the negative side of the wiring.
I took it out lifted up and down and fuel gauge didn't move. that's bit in fuel tank yeah. Hand seems to have dropped
ok so having looked at pics I think the guy connected it up wrong, ground and wire to gauge the wrong way round. If I just swap them back round is this likely to work or will it have done damage?
Unlikely to have damaged it. Swap the wires: brown earth to the body of the sender, other lead to the centre terminal.
There both brown but one seems to ground in the fire wall, I assume the earth. And other goes to side and I assume to the front to the gauge
The one screwed to the chassis is the earth. The brown/black(?) one vanishes off to the right and goes through a panel, then into the loom to the front. From memory, this may have a connector in it: has this come undone?
