Want to take the lid off. I can see on the bay that one hinge is welded and the other has a screw, which seems to allow adjustment. But, is the screw meant to come right out? I don't want to force it, so just checking. Jim
Yeap just unscrew it and it'll pop off. Easier with two people, or you can lash it to the rear hatch to support it (this was an earlier style hinge but same idea):
Thanks James. So, at present, the screw undoes a quarter turn, and the hinge is moveable. Then do up a quarter turn, and it's locked again . Are you saying I keep turning? Or, does the quarter turn somehow also allow it to pop off?
Keep turning. It should come out, so you can pull the hinge out. If not, possible the captive nut inside has rusted off, in which case you’ll have to cut the screw off and put something like a rivnut in.
It is usually the protruding thread of the screw behind the nut a has corroded. Sqiurt some penetrating fluid and undo the screw by screwing out till it binds, screw back in a touch and keep working like that till it comes out.
Thank you. It's very odd. It turns a quarter, then stops. Not like a normal rusty screw stops. Feels more like it is deliberately locating into the unlock position...if that makes sense? I stopped before damaged the screw too much, so will try some heat and penetration oil
Bigherb may be right, and it’s just rusted at the end. At least it appears that your captive bit is intact. Try the squirting method, with a bit more force. The screw is only a short one, thankfully.
Sorted. Pen oil, heat and a dremmel to recut the screw head. Eventually came out, and captive nut/sliding plate still in place. Thanks for the pointers everyone. 1979 Super Viking, 2lt type 4, Automatic
