Right then still need to get the barrel out of the cowling.

The bottom of the cowling just pops off of the top section which leaves you this

The two Phillips screws hold the lock and ignition switch in place and once that's out you can get to the tiny screw which holds the ignition switch onto the back of the key barrel.

Here's what you have now. The dark square at the bottom is where the ignition switch was fitted. Notice how thick the black band is around the ignition key hole.

This hole looks like it should release the spring holding the key barrel inside the housing

It isn't. I used the new barrel to estimate where to drill my new access hole

Once you've got the new hole use a thin Allen key or suchlike and push the sping down while pulling the barrel out using the key.

    Ta Da!!!

All you need to do now is fit the new one.

It does say on the Just Kampers website that some surgery is needed to make this barrel fit our vans.

Have a look at the locating lands on the two barrels. The old one has one land and the new ones have three. Obviously two need removing. :(

This is after the filing and the new barrel now slides into the housing and the spring locks into its recess perfectly.

    But...

Remember I said earlier to notice how deep the black band was around the old barrel.

What that means is that when the new barrel is fitted a good 1/4 inch of the silver barrel sticks out past the cowling and looks stupid.
It's not possible to locate the barrel further into the cowling because of the locating spring, it clicks into one position and one position only.

I painted the uncovered section of the barrel black and then slipped an 'O' ring seal on to disguise the step.

Then, flushed with success I went off and bought a wooden rimmed steering wheel.

Overall the job was well worth it to have a single key for every lock. If you've got a left hand drive van then the sliding door lock fits perfectly and apart from a bit of filing so does the ignition lock.

  5. The sliding door lock fits dead easy on the LHD door, 5 minutes out and new back in

Yeah @MorkC68 said the same for his LHD wagon.

  7. Did anyone figure out what the extra lock barrel was for?

  8. Petrol cap.

I was wondering why you didn't remove the operating bit from the original lock and use that on the new one?

It's a totally different method of fastening, the old lock uses a locking spring washer and the new one uses a Phillips screw.

The extra lock barrel is indeed for the petrol cap but after speaking to JK about it the Barazilian cap is radically different to our old style. I still might get an old locking petrol cap one day and see if I can get the new barrel to fit.

    I'd still have tried. :D

  12. Great write up. Thanks for taking the time to post this.

    :)

  13. Is that a guess or do you know? The barrel is quite long, say 40mm but no apparent means of fixing

  14. It was mentioned earlier in the thread.

  18. An illustration from rattwell.com for the correct position for the hole to remove the old barrel (it's still difficult all the same but it is the correct place)
