Oh god another one of the ruddy Barnsley Mafia

Welcome to the forum Richard, good luck with the project.

I would recommend Alan Schofield for body panels as he is close by you in Glossop and offers a collection service.

And as far as silly questions go, ask away as we all ask silly questions sometimes & the advice given on here will either be superb or neither use n'or ornament :D but they are a great, helpful bunch!

If you can get to Techenders next april (its in the shows and events section), you will meet a lot of the regulars and see our buses and the variation in what we have all done!

Welcome and I think that you know you have your hands full there.
Good luck and will it be a rolling road resto?
    :hattip:

  6. Anything is possible. My neighbours either love me or hate me for doing this all on the communal parking. I have welded, grinded, painted, carpentry, electrics and even upholstery. The van started green and looked OK, but grinding bits away you start to realise the extent of the corrosion. Don't get disheartened, just keep thinking that if you do the job properly you will have a solid van for years and years.

Just make sure you have good face masks as I made myself very ill sanding down the old paint as I assume it released some rather nasty stuff. Setting yourself alight whilst welding or grinding was quite fun.

And getting a parking ticket for not clearly displaying a permit because my van was under a cover was an unforgivable act.

Enjoy your resto and make sure you take daily pictures of your work and remember that to do things properly take a long time hence why most restos take years.

Good luck and if you are local to South East London, you are welcome to borrow my huge collection of tools

  7. Welcome. I also bought my first bus this year. Wanted one for years and finally thought sod it. At 44 I bought a 73 westfalia. So very similar. Office worker as well with a very little amount of experince. I often look at other people’s resto’s on here and marvel at their skills. I am getting some welding / mechanics done but am trying to do a lot myself. Opted for a multi year rolling resto

We did what we had to and have been out 5/6 times this summer and we all loved it. Stripped out interior again for winter to do some larger work. Really excited. Not become a total obsession but well on the way. My advice as with many here is get over the ‘its not as perfect as theirs’ and just get it usable.

Good luck and I am sure you will love it when you get away in it.

  11. wow .....I hope you realise how much work you have there .......shame they fitted different rear arch .... does it have an MOT ? I would advise doing a rolling resto , start with the main chassis ,outriggers ,jacking points ,sills etc first ...... you have to DIY otherwise its not a viable resto .........best of luck ...

  12. I am going to have a good look under the van on Saturday and work up a shopping list. I suspect I will need a front beam to start with!! Ouch!!

  13. I would take lots of pics so you can view them on your pc at leisure and maybe post a few on here for helpful comments.

Used to help my dad do a milk round in Wombwell. I was born in Ardsley but live near (soon to be totally gone) Flouch.

I'd work from the top down on that, look at the roof and gutters inside and out, that could be the biggest hardest job and determine whether the whole things a viable project.

  20. Although I set myself a 5yr plan I am hoping to get it road worthy much sooner. It hasn't had an MOT since 2012 and has been dry stored for much of that time. If I can get the chassis sorted by this time next year I will be happy. I would love to do a rolling resto but the engine is on my garage floor.
