It’s telling you it isn’t charging. But at least it works.

So had a look at the brushes, they look like they've got a bit of life left in them but having never seen worn brushes on this kind of alternator I don't really know how they compare.
So you guys reckon there is enough life left in?

    Thanks

  5. Great thread - congratulations on getting the MOT. Good luck with the sale.

  6. Plenty left in them.

  7. Looks like it is a knackered alternator then... there is a local bloke who tests them and possibly can fix it. Can't really take it over to him for a few days though.

In the mean time, does anyone have any suggestions of ways to troubleshoot it?

    So far:

    -brushes = good
    -connections = good
    - 12v at the alternator regardless of engine running or not

    Thanks

  8. Brushes may be fine but the voltage regulator could be knackerd

  9. Need to check slip ring, that what the brushes run on. Also check warning light, alternator needs a working light .

  10. Light is working and it is constantly on from moment ignition is switched on and remains on whilst the engine is running regardless of speed.
Is it an easy job to check the slip rings and if so, what exactly is it that I am looking for?

    cheers

  11. I would be right in assuming that the regulator is internal?

I've been looking at the wiring in the engine bay today and I have found a few things that are botched. The red, brown and green wires that appear next to each other on the wiring diagram appear to have been cut at the loom. Now is this a common thing as the wires are there for buses that have an external regulator or is this something I should be concerned with?

    cheers

  12. How many terminals on your alternator,if it's got an internal regulator there are two ,one stud for battery pos lead and one spade for warning light. If you disconnect spade terminal does light go out ?

  13. Big gauge red/white wire going to starter and a smaller gauge blue wire spade connection going to idiot light. There was also a black earth coming out the loom attached to the alternator bracket, assuming it's earth for something but I can't trace it to where it goes.

Remove blue spade connection and light goes out.

    Cheers

  14. Decided to take the alternator out and take it to get tested. Turns out the rectifier was faulty which in turn killed the regulator so £100 later, it's been reconditioned. Turns out it is much easier to take out then it is to put back in! A lot of swear words, hitting my head and cups of tea but it's finally back in and working as it should!
Spent the last few days finishing an array of small jobs such as tarting up the roof rack, painting the wheels, fitting bits of trim, putting bumpers on and tidying the van up! The end is in sight though!! Here is how she looks at the moment[IMG][IMG]
Tomorrow's plan is to reassemble the dash after trying to figure out if an electrical fault was the cause of the alternator being faulty, then give it a wash and clean. Mum has reupholstered the cushions and made up new curtains so by the weekend they should all be in and a big 'for sale' sign in her window! Off to Australia for a few months at the end of October so would be lovely to see her gone before I leave!
