Its the silly little bits that are the most time consuming. Started putting the wiper motor and linkage back together and i can't remember how the arm goes back on. Both these motors are in the 'park' position but have the arms pointing different directions. Bentley manual apparently says position drive crank 90 degree angle to the armature shaft when viewed from the end of the driveshaft. Doesn't look 90 degrees to me in the book. Opened up the non running fresh air fan to see what the brushes were like and found broken connectors on wires and one of the aluminium terminals is broken too. Not sure if its fixable so will use the original non fan one for now.
Original airbox is going back in instead of the one with the fan in. I'll see about getting it fixed at some point and swap them over. I don't have the dash switch or the drain connector for it anyway so its not the end of the world. Ordered a couple of inline fuses and a new connector for the starter end of the 25mm2 cable from the battery as the other one broke off. Fixed the small broken bit of the dashboard vent with some seriously sticky ABS plastic glue. Not pretty but not visible anyway.
Dashboard nearly all built up. Just grab handle, chrome trim and horn button to go. Managed to get this fibreglass steroe glovebox to fit OK after a lot of swearing. Wiring under bonnet all done. Under back seat wiring tidied up too.
That dash looks fantastic I’ve noticed that some wiper motors have two small notches in the body to line up the spindle arm. You could loosely build it up with two small pieces of masking tape acting as wiper arms.
Cheers. There were no notches on this one unfortuntely. I'll just try it with the arms off the screen and see.
Not got much done today as cutting the grass and trimming the berberis overhanging the pavement out front took priority. All i managed to do was make a small bracket to hang the klaxon off the front bumper mount. I might make a small clamp to fit the bottom lip of the wing to stop the klaxon whacking it.
Looks like the underside of the wings need a coat of stonechip or something as they look a little ratty and could do with some protection. Still need a few bits and pieces which i can hopefully pick up at Tatton on the 5th of august including a decent front bumper, some 185/65/15 tyres, exhaust silencer, 180mm clutch cover, front shocks and the engine bay seals.
Gotta do brake pipes and CV joints on my caravelle for its MOT (and replace the bumper corner i broke) so works stopped for the moment.
Wating for brake fluid to arrive as none available locally. Grew a couple of rear bumper mounts. Rear bumper doesn't seem that bad after a cleanup. Inside paint needs touching up in a few places after its been rust cured. Arch gap.
Got all the bumper mounts painted in gloss black now. I just need to remember which is the front and which is the rear.
Made a couple of chrome brackets for front spot lights so bolted the combined fog and reverse light to it. I've got an original bosch mounting bracket for it but thought i'd see what it looked like bolted onto a bumper bracket as i have no spot lights yet to try. Painted the inside of the bumper in gloss grey instead of silver. Tidies it up nicely.
Made a start on fitting window rubbers to windows. The seal on the rear window took me bloody ages. Sure the rear hatch window on my bay took me 5 minutes to fit the seal to but this has taken the best part of 45 minutes, as once one corner was on the other side popped off. Nice Sekurit heated rear window though. Bet only one line works though.
Managed to get the rear window fitted on my own. Don't think i can do the side windows myself as they're more likely to fall off the car as the wire is pulled around the seal.
You’d benefit from one of those suction handles that the window fitters use... attach inside, pull that with one hand and bring the wire out with the other
I've got one somewhere. Not sure i'd trust it 100% though and there were times i needed 2 hands especially when it was nearly in as the cable kept trying to just pull through rather than pulling the window seal over the lip. It went in in about 5 minutes so the side ones are probably quicker as they are half the size.
Got the rest of the windows fitted today with no problems, though smacking the glass with the palm of your hand is a little scary. Checked the old bumper off my 1303 against the bumper of my 1300 and the mounts won't fit as non of the holes match. Gonan have to drill 6 new holes in it and file them all square for the bumper bolts. She's looking more and more like a complete car now.
Made a start on the engine by removing the bay bellhousing and starter and draining the oil. Started removing the 6 sump plate nuts and a few unscrewed the stud instead. Left it draining around the edges of the plate before i remove it completely. Found the long battery earth lead i've been looking for, so cleaned the overspray off it with thinners and bolted it to the M8 thread on the rear crossmember. Used a grinding stone on a dremel to square the 8mm holes in the rear bumper for the chrome coach bolts.
