My 1973 Bay window restoration project.

  1. My Bay window 1973, Orange. ( according to the v5 )

So here it is... I paid £1500 for my van back in 2016 and well you pay for what you get. It looked fairly solid to start with like most things. I live in Leicestershire and i picked it up in north Manchester on the back of a trailer. I brought it off a family of 5 and they each had there own camper vans, this was the daughters but they wanted to sell it to raise funds for her university so thats where i came into my hands.

So i've basically had it stripped back to the bare frame and rebuilt it back up from scratch and had 85% of the van solid welded and ive got the last few pieces of it to do. To strip it back it took 3 people and 33 Ltrs of paint stripper. The thing had 7 layers of paint on it From: Orange, red, orange, orange, red, red, grey primer.

So far i've had replaced :

    Whole new inner cargo floor
    Drivers seat rear repaired
    Passenger rear repaired
    All the windows repaired
    New door skins
Driver/passenger doors repaired fully ( Used about 3 old doors to transplant parts )
    Sliding door repaired
Inner front valence transplanted off a bay pick up
    Outer valence/bumper new
    Whole new front panel
    Front window arches repaired
All the jacking points and main central beams repaired
Rear near side wheel arch panel
Rear driver side wheel arch panel
    Driver side door step
Near side whole wheel arch replacement ( Getting down tomorrow infact )
    Driver floor replace
    Passenger floor replaced
    Seat sliders replaced
Whole new battery tray welded in
Near side battery tray as well
    Rear bumper brackets repaired
    Rear boot lid repaired
    Rear air vents sand blasted

I'm sure i could go on for longer but that all i can think to the top of my head. As far as I am aware the roof its self is in perfect condition and all the drainage lips look good as well. The only parts left to weld the last 15% is the front wheel arch whole replacement and the top of the boot lid needs replacing then probably jsut a few touch up bits.

I look forward to keeping you updated and hopefully if you can spot anything to give me a shout and point me in the right direction :) Here are some photos

  9. Yeah i went to the just kampers open day last saturday and i was trying to find out what my roof is. They had no idea and had never seen one like it and said its quite rare its almost a devon / moon hybrid. Thats what they suggested anyways FB_IMG_1498079306810.jpg

  11. 10 hours later and we have the near side wheel arch and step fitted...

Reproduction parts were so poor quality hense the reason why it took an age. A lot of hammer hitting and vice bending with more fillet required to make it look normal again. Getting the gap between the door was the hardest thing. 20139912_10154666213171053_4600977962026370344_n (1).jpg 20106742_10154666213401053_7433270072405713025_n.jpg 19990501_10154666213521053_4364331071835298453_n.jpg 20106408_10154666213621053_4606106988808769979_n.jpg 20032061_10154666213726053_2390586775696698178_n.jpg 20046551_10154666213821053_6176638014394890826_n.jpg 19990364_10154666214021053_4466429191040086674_n.jpg 19894974_10154666213566053_6323216173724184585_n.jpg

  12. Another day, we took the roof off to find who ever fitted the roof did a bodge job so had to fill 200-300 rivit holes with weld. Likewise we started to repair the rear tail gate. IMG-20170729-WA0021.jpg IMG-20170729-WA0019.jpg IMG-20170729-WA0018.jpg IMG-20170729-WA0016.jpg
