    A little more progress.

    New (used) rear shock.

New (used) silencers - if you could call them that

    New headlight mounted flyscreen.

Just the brakes left to sort.

Still not finished but at least it’s on the road now, which is a major step forward. I took it out yesterday for its first shake down run in the sun.

You can’t hear it, but it’s ticking nicely as it cools down in this pic

Not sure about the rear light and number plate mount. I think there will be a Mk 2 version in the wings.

That spoked rear wheel was an absolute mission. Lots of machining to get it to fit only to discover the drum was unevenly worn and then finding a specialist to lace it with an offset it for me.

I’m happy with it so far.

To paint or not to paint ?

I quite like the industrial bare metal look.

  8. Good work mate. I finally moved mine for the first time in 10 years, and gave it a wash. I've been making room in the garage to work on it. It looks nice in the pics, but it's going to need some work. The master cylinder and both carbs are seized, and loads of rust on the frame. It was leaking fork oil from the very top of the forks when I put it away. I'm sure I'll find more. The plan is to remove the touring kit, make up a single seat frame and lose the rear mud gaurd and lights. Not sure about bars yet. I like the high touring bars as I'm 6'1", but without a fairing, I'll be like a sail .[IMG][IMG][IMG]

very nice. Could you just get a part fairing to stop your head and shoulders getting battered?

  10. The spoked wheels look much better.

What a great isolation project :)

Even after such a long lay up I bet you get it running quite quickly.

Mine has the euro low rise bars that I think work quite well with a flyscreen. I’m only a strapping 5’9” though ;)

You probably already know them but I get most of my service parts from Motorworks in Yorkshire.

Keep us posted on the progress.

    Thankyou

Engineering that rear wheel to fit was an absolute mission involving several trips to a local machine shop but it was worth it in the end.

  13. Was the top mounting position of the rear shock changed for a reason? I thought they were more vertical.

  14. Could do. The original plan was a cafe racer with a bikini fairing, but the world and his wife have been doing that over the last few years, and I'm not sure about drop handlebars or clip-ons, as it's a really comfortable seating position. I don't want to do it and find I've ruined the experience.
I've been hooked on the bike shed videos on YouTube. I really like the flat tracker look everyone's doing, but its a bit lardy for that. BMW have built a cruiser concept that looks great. Same colour too. Decisions decisions.

    Good spot.

The bike originally had twin shocks which are much more upright.

In 1985 BMW introduced a mono shock rear end to the bikes.

This bike has the later monoshock rear suspension and also the much improved front suspension and brakes (it had a drum brake at the front originally)

As I started with a bare frame I didn’t feel tied to doing a restoration and could build it how I wanted. Certainly not one for the BMW purist.

    Flat tracker ? [IMG]
    - more upright riding position.

There wouldn’t be much of the original bike left - it’s so minimal

  19. Yes, that's what's in my head. I like the oversize tyres.
There's a lot of work on that. Forks have been replaced with upside down ones, and the swing arm is different.
