  1. Hows that work? Must have some kind of test/ check surely?

    A stupid idea.
It's getting discussed to death on a couple of other threads on here somewhere.

  4. How's it stupid?
I haven't noticed a great big pile up of pre 1960 vehicles since they were MOT exempt.
Now everyone is proclaiming instant carnage and death post May 2018??

Where did i proclaim instant carnage and death? Read my comments on the other thread as to why it's a stupid idea.
There are many many times as many late 70s vehicles as pre 1960. Anyway, it's fine until someone does have an accident in a non-roadworthy vehicle.

  6. Where did I say you did?
The risk of a non roadworthy killing you is far greater from a halfrauds saxo/corsa special than a 40+ YO historic vehicle

  7. Many thanks for the link to the 'big debate' Baysearcher. Some very interesting views on Late Bay. Somehow I agree with the general view that the MOT is my certificate of achievement in keeping a 42 year old van roadworthy and driveable.

I was the only 1 on this thread who's posted against the idea so I think it was a fair assumption.

I can't understand anyone thinking it's a good thing,or will do anything other than lower the standard of a lot of vehicles on the road. By your (flawed) logic I'd imagine they'd be better off making the MOT much harsher; not binning it off?

Personally, I think it's got little to do with safety, or the fact that people with classics tend to look after them, and more to do with the fact that there aren't enough testers about with any idea about older vehicles. Not to mention the first step towards restricted use.

Each to their own though and time will tell if it's a good thing or not.

  9. My plan is to take it for an MOT check without the MOT, I currently get my MOT for £32 trade. Now it will be minus the governments fee (probably a tenner or so) for doing them. It will also not fail but I will still know whats wrong and needs doing :)

  10. Not a bad shout.... I'm quite confident my ride is "safe", but without a brake balance and efficieny tester, plus exhaust sniffer and a ramp I can't quite check everything that would be checked on an MOT. so for the sake of £30 ish, why not? I'm sure the garage would be quite happy to comply...
