Oil bath filter

  1. He hasn't got that type of air filter.
Bays with 1.6l engines have been fitted with numerous types of filters over the years.
Oil bath with weighted preheat flap small preheat pipe.
Preheat flap operated by a cable from the engine thermostat large preheat pipe
Preheat flap operated by a wax thermostat.
Preheat flap operated by vacuum diaphram controlled by a thermostat in top of the filter.
Then lastly the paper element type.
And that is not including the cyclone type filters.

  2. Yes if early the flap was vacuum operated.

  3. So @Bigherb can you tell me how this paper box one flap works , it’s not off my bus it’s one I bought with possibility of swapping for my oil bath one ? As I can’t seem to get or even see a flap on this one ?? 3380B3A7-5A87-4021-90DC-8E2C86E0C6C3.jpeg

    Thanks ?

  4. The flap is under the round diaphragm in the square box of the intake pipe, it is spring loaded to the open position, if you suck on the diaphragm pipe the flap should close. Prise up the plastic clips around the square part under the diaphragm to access the flap.

  5. It's in the smaller part which has the hose that goes through the tin ware, under where you've marked This in red.

Can you clarify/tell me/show me where you fuel vent line attaches to the filter? I think it is the thinner pipe in picture 1. My vent line comes from the top into the top of my pancake at the moment (see engine bay piccy in first post).
I will then know where to drill and fix a (6mm?) spigot.
    Thanks

  9. Somewhere around here.

  10. Mind doesn't connect into the fuel vent line but connects from one side of the air box to the other if you follow its path between the two on the previous photos. I see mine has a reducer push fit connector which is probably what you need in order to connect the small diameter pipe too the overhead one without have to tap another connector into the filter?

Cheers. My air filter box just has the one vent hole/tube, for connecting to the crankcase vent. It is seen in the picture re-posted by @Bigherb above. So looks like I will have to cut a hole and find some suitable spigot to use with it (I have not found anything yet...).
An alternative is some form of 3-way joint pipe so that I can tap into the crankcase vent pipe and feed my fuel tank vent into that??
@robcod - where does your fuel vent, er, vent to then?

  12. Definitely not, if petrol expands down the tank breather pipe (it does happen) it will fill the crankcase with petrol.

Robs picture is a late filter, the crankcase breather was moved to the air intake and the original breather spigot used a reducer to connect to the tank breather.

  13. The easiest way to fit a spigot is the fit a 1/8 or 1/4" BSP male thread fitting with 6mm spigot (make sure it is parallel thread not taper thread) and thin locking nut,

I have refurbed my filter box stand and I need some help to position it so I bolt it into the correct place.
Could someone measure the rear edge (nearest) of their tray to a fixed point, eg the rear panel, so that I have a good reference point.
    Thanks

Whilst I am here, I was looking underneath to see where the crankcase breather goes under the tin-wear and I see it here, sticking into fresh air. Should it be attached to anything?

I think this will do :) - an old modified bicycle brake cable sleeve, with thin nuts and an o-ring to seal.

A hundred cans of beans and a big bottle of water and you can survive a nuclear winter...apparently ;)
Whereabouts in Suffolk? - not too far away from Norfolk...
