Oil Level - dipstick

Discussion in 'Mech Tech' started by Neptuneblue, Jul 25, 2013.

  1. On a 2ltr engine what is the qualtity difference between full dipstick marking and low dipstick marking? I ask because despite my engine painting a pretty pattern over my driveway the dipstick level barely moves.

No idea but would guess between 1/2 and 1 litre of oil?

  3. It always looks like there's loads, when its on a driveway.

In reality it'll be a tiny amount, even a teaspoon of oil will look like loads.

  4. I found I was dripping a fair amount until I calibrated my dipstick. When you do an oil and filter change it should take 3 1/2 litres but on mine it only reaches the bottom line with this amount. If I go up to the top line it leaks out quite quickly.

When I last did my engine oil and filter, after changing strainer and replacing pushrod tube seals it took nearer 4 litres to fill to line. Garage is level and was filling with measuring jug....did concern me at time in case I had overfilled, which I know can cause problems.

  6. The type 4 engine should only be filled to 3 and half litres, regardless of what the dipstick says. Remember the dipstick has a little grommet at the top and as this crushes down and degrades then the dipstick will go in further. Be safe and mesure

If dipstick could go in further due to crushed grommet, that would mean that it would give a falsely high reading....i.e. would show as full with less than 3.5 litres.......logically to need 4 litres, the dipstick is not going far enough in ?

My favourite engine builder once said to me "Sod that, put in an extra half litre, it'll find it's own level if it's too much". I always overfill my T1 (I've got a good litre extra in at the moment and it's been fine), though have to admit everyone elses gets it measured in and the dipstick is always proved right within half a cupful. One day I'll find a dodgy dipstick and it'll all be worth it. You can't trust the graduations on the container you buy it in either, buy a litre marked jug type thing.

BTW there are no seals that will blow out because there's too much oil.

  9. Wash it out before you put it back in the Wife's kitchen cupboard,.................or else!!:theforce:

    With petrol. :D

  11. Just so I am clear on this half a litre over the line is fine and any excess will be lost. Is that via burning? So if it stabilises over the max line thats your new fill level?

I think he was trying to say make sure it's got enough and not worry if you overfill it a bit. I didn't mean to have an extra litre in mine but once I had I thought I'd see what happened in the interest of science. Bugger all, so the extra half won't hurt IMO.

Not really, he and I are trying to say don't worry if you chuck a bit more in than you meant.

  14. I had a bit of a moment when topping my oil up and ended up with about 2 cm over the upper mark. I had a ferry to catch, so no time to do much about it. So I turned the engine over expecting spluttering oil in the engine bay - all fine, drove slowly for a few miles, still good and then did about 300 miles over the next day or 2 with no problems. It has settled down to about 1 cm above the top mark now and I assume the rest has burned off through the breathers.

If however, you filled it enough for the oil level to be lapping into the barrels with the engine off, it'll seep past the rings and oil doesn't compress like air/fuel mix. I imagine that wouldn't be good. I have no idea how much of an overfill would get you this deep though.

Oil level depends on what year your bus is, although 5mm is only around 250ml. Found this on Samba when i was trying to find the correct marks to put on my temp. probe dipstick.

  17. I have a 1600 as engine, ive refitted today, got the engine as empty as it'll ever be, of oil.

Anyway once refilled with 2.5l of fine oil it only just reaches the lower mark on my dipstick, can anyone give me the measurement / length of their stick

If I over fill my T1 slightly it always drops back quickly to full on the dipstick. Because I park it nose down, that corresponds to about half way down the dipstick where I park it.

I know my engine will then take between 0.5 and 1L extra oil to fill the external filter and external cooler loop, so I usually put in 3 litres after an oil change, then add a bit more. (FRAM HP-1 apart from stupidly expensive need nearly a litre of oil to fill ... ) I now use Golf sized filters that are more sensible.

On one occasion I put in about 5 litres because the oil pump wouldnt prime with the bus up on ramps and even more nose down. Then having cranked for oil pressure, I used a vacuum oil change tank connected to the dipstick tube to suck oil out without having to dribble it underneath.

Why? What’s wrong with running it with say 4 litres of oil?

  20. I believe that may blow crankcase oil seals.
