    Okay knowledgable peeps :D

What is the best paint to use in the long term on a Westy' fibreglass roof?

Will Rustoleum primer followed by colour be suitable or do I need yacht primer and colour.

I can get the rustoleum easily, what about yacht paint, any links / advise gratefully received!

  2. I’m using acrylic white . Cheap Stuff but works. I am actually painting the roof today as a coincidence.Seems I’m doing it every three or four years. And I don’t sound down anything to keep that roughness. My big question not to hijack your thread is I tried to clean the inside fuzzy stuff. With some spray bleach mix . Wondering how to get it clean or should I take the top off and redo it but with what?

Ive also got that fuzzy stuff to do, I was thinking of sealing it in with some form of varnish / laquer as I didnt fancy getting the bits everywhere

Mine's had a couple of coats of Rustoleum.....May try and wet sand over the winter to improve look a bit.....but it looks OK as it is.

  5. I did my Westy roof nine years ago in Tekaloid. No primer needed, 2 coats, and still looks good. Just roll it on and smooth with a brush here and there.
It was quite hard sanding the old surface as it was so grubby. In the end I just made sure it was smooth and had got all the dust off even though it still looked grubby. I wasn't quite so fastidious cleaning the dust off the front rack and it came out gritty and needed more work.

I suspect Tekaloid and Rustoleum are pretty much the same thing.

  6. What about the fuzzy stuff.!?. Anyone do that.?

Is it really in need of painting?
Can't you get a good quality fiberglass cleaner/polish from a chandlers and buff it up!
It is what I did and regular polishing keeps it looking good.

Don’t do that Mark, the flock is there to reduce condensation drips, remove it or paint it and it will rain inside.

It’s easy to clean with a mould remover spray, I use HG but there are several others https://uk.hg.eu/products/mould/hg-mould-spray-05l Spray it on and if necessary use a soft brush but the mould and dirt will usually just disappear. Then sponge off with water.

  9. I sprayed mine with 2k Mark, only primed a small bit that had filler in, scotchbrite off and chuck it on.

But rustoleum has always looked good on the Poptops I’ve seen done in it.

I'll try that, but looking at it a repaint would be best :)

    Nice one, thanks Geoff!

  16. I did ours with just some cheapo mildew remover spray, I think it was 99p from a discount store. Easy enough to spray it on, let it soak for a few minutes and then scrub off with some cloths or tissue. Probably best to cover over any interior fixtures and upholstery and wear a hat and eye protection, it's not particularly dangerous but it does contain a certain amount of bleach. It certainly brightens up the interior and as our daughter sleeps up there she definitely appreciated it! [IMG]

  17. Yes, with mixed result.

I made a flocking machine out of a "high voltage generator" (about £3 on ebay), tupperware and a metal sieve. I then got hold of flock from -

It's not soo bad, but I'd do a better job next time. Take roof off, remove canvas etc, turn over, mask, glue, then shake it like a polaroid picture. The high static causes the fibres to stand on end and fire themselves into the glue.

  19. Yeah - ours hasn't got any fuzzy liner inside and it does drip condensation at night

There are two ways to skin a rabbit...or so I've found as I gently slide into dotage.
