Painting engine!

  1. Iv bought silver ht paint for the engine case and black for heat exchangers but could I get away with the fan surround and tin wear in normal ?

  2. In a word ..... No.
Splash out on good high temp paint and it`ll do the trick for the tins but i`v never had much success painting the heat exchangers & exhaust ...

    :hattip:

  3. do all the top end in flat black....HEXs cylinders, pushrod tubes etc. fan surround and tin wear in any rust resistant paint, such a rustoleum, enamel, etc.
if you want to make it pretty, you could always take the fan surround and tin wear to a nickel platers or stove enamellers and have them blast cleaned and powder coated, in whatever colour you fancy....it's surprisingly cheap and pretty resilient to chipping, scratching etc.
Bear in mind that stove enameled paint is baked on at over 100 degrees, so isn't going to be affected by a bit of heat....

  4. see if there's a nickel platers locally....chemical dip, nickel plate then stove painted....cost me just over £100 to have two big cardboard boxes full of stuff done, including all the tinwear, the doghouse, including fan, brake back plates, heat exchangers, pulleys, spot light cases, headlamp bowls, brake parts....you name it....still rust free after seven years:thumbsup:

The trouble with HT paint is it has to get hot to cure, and while it does, after initially drying after you paint it on, it melts again. Powder coating is good.

  8. Sorry Paul it's the one in my resto thread type 4 2.0 I just thought might get away with the fan bit and tin wear normal paint

See, that would annoy me every time I looked at it until I'd sorted out the jubilee clips on the heater tubes. To be symmetrical one has to be turned round.

  11. I'd say powdercoat all the way. Good selection of colours for the fan case it lasts an age and resistant to oil, heat and scratches
    :)

  12. I was going to say don't paint the case - vw never did, and the aluminium of the type 4 is very durable, and any paint applied will start flaking after a very short period of time!! :)

  13. Another vote for not painting the case here - you want it to dissipate heat!

Powder coat if you don't have Para's extreme patience! I'm just doing this 1776 for someone (oops needs a wipe). Similar.

  20. Fan was gently blasted and masked. Vanes not coated for fear of causing an imbalance
