Running rough

Discussion in 'Mech Tech' started by paulzac1, Sep 19, 2019.

  1. Hi all
Whilst running the van has been very sluggish, had timing sorted a couple of times now all fine for a little while then goes back to stalling and misfiring in all gears, seems a frequent occurrence, ok for a while then drops back.
Could it be the ignition timing or something else.
    Cheers

If you are using points and they are getting damaged by a lack of grease on the lobes of the cam in the distributor or burning with a defective condenser , the timing will change more rapidly over time.

There are a lot of kinds of fault that all end up with sluggish and rough running.

At one end of the range is a melted piston or a missing valve head. A bus will still do 50 mph on three good working cylinders.

In between is bodges and vacuum leaks and poor maintenance.

At the other end is a loose wire.

Put up a youtube video or better description please .

  3. Air leak in vacuum somewhere? Can you hear a whistling or sound of air coming from anywhere? Not necessarily in the engine bay, just in front of the rear near side wheel tucked above the rubber heater boot, there’s the brake boost hose.

Could be loads of things. If it’s good just after the timing has been done, is the dizzy clamp bent and not holding the dizzy in place?

  5. Have you got contact breakers? Are they closing up? If they are, they'll give you a lousy spark. I'd start with them.

  6. Thanks, had new points and plugs fitted recently, like I said was sorted but seems to go back to been sluggish.

  7. May be the clamping screw for the breakers letting them slip. Worth checking. Could be many other things as well.

  8. Cheers again for the info, hopefully will sort it.
